Is there a thread anywhere on Guatemala - Mexico?
Did anyone else see Cabrera get burned like, um, RSL's defenders got burned? No wonder there are rumors that he is about to sign with MLS. He'll fit right in on our current back line. Mexico 4 Guatemala 0. Jared Borgetti turned around Cabrera for the first goal. KC 13 buys drinks!

To be fair, Cabrera slipped on the lousy coliseum field. More sand than turf. Looked to me like he was having to play three positions at once for Guatemala. It helps to have a complete back line of good defenders around you. Don't we know it. __________________

I think the FO has done a decent job of assembling a squad on the fly, but we need more discovery players and we need to draft impact instead of developmental players in the draft. Is Jorge Estrada good enough to play in the league? __________________

Hi, this is my first post here. I have been a huge fan of the Guatemalan side for years. Cabrera is pure class - I've watched him play for club and country on a number of occasions and have watched him grow as a player through that time. While he's clearly not ready to step in and play for a side in La Liga, I anticipate this kid will be one of the best MLS has to offer out of the gate - he's that good. As per the comment above, you need to watch that goal again. When you do, note how Cabrera (who's playing central defender) is responsible for holding the line on an offsides trap and his other central defender and right fullback are hanging behind him inside the 18... they didn't hold with Cabrera and this is what allowed Borghetti to drift forward on top of the box and get behind the defense to receive the ball. Cabrera then moves to his left to cover for this and slips on the turf when Borghetti cuts back centrally. This is a perfect example of how this kid is made to look bad when playing with his national team. As a central defender, he did his job to hold the line and then swing and cover the blown mark. To the casual observer, he looks to have been beaten simply because he inserted himself in the play. Also, watch the game against Mexico and you'll see that Cabrera is constantly covering three sides of the field because el Primi is paying a 3-5-2 formation with slow, unqualified defenders on the flank around Cabrera. He's got very good "recovery" speed and never gives up. You guys are getting a very solid pickup here. You'll love the way he plays with intensity and composure. He always lays it on the line (see said goal by Borghetti -- kid got beaten and still dove to stick his head in the way in an effort to save a shot that would have decapitated him!). He's perfect for Salt Lake because he'll give the fans what the fans give to the team, and that is undying commitment to winning. He'll also provide you with good distribution to the midfield which is sorely needed!

Oh, and for the record, to prove that I don't just have blind allegiance to the Guate team -- I think Pando is overly hyped and very mediocre for an MLS midfielder. Perhaps that should provide some perspective.

Welcome RSL1 and we appreciate your comments on Cabrera.
I think that you'll find a high level of critical commentary on almost every player associated with RSL right now (losing does that). I for one have high hopes for Gustavo and hope he does sign with RSL soon.

Thanks, RSL1--great analysis. I saw the game and agree with take, particularly the fact that he was having to cover for less talented teammates. And lets not forget that not only is Mexico a very good team, but they had just lost to South Africa and were, shall we say, intense. I also caught a tape of the Municipal-Comunicaciones game on GolTV, with much the same result. Cabrera played well, but one guy can't cover every forward making a run into the PA. Welcome to the board. __________________
