What game earlier in the year did we lose/tie in extra time while we still had a sub on the bench? I'm pretty sure this has happened before and I don't get it.

Once you are in stoppage time the object is to run out the clock as quickly as possible and limit the number of chances your opponent has. Which is why you go to the corners and waste time and earn a corner/throw or give up a deep throw/goal kick.

Another tactic, if available, is a substitution. You can easily waste 45 seconds on a sub. Why didn't that happen last night?

Yesterday was one of four games where local refs meet with the MLS refs after the game for a Q&A.

Natuarally, one of the first questions was why couldn't they have given 3 minutes stoppage time. The CR laughed and said that he was leaning toward giving 4 minutes but there were three subs in the last ten minutes. One of the AR's then mentioned how long it took for Garlick to set the ball.

We live in a different world these days I guess, where parents want to coddle their children.

To those who have teenagers: your kids hear far worse language at school and in a more sexually explicit manner than anything they'll hear at a soccer match.

to those who have kids in elementry: kids are cussing there as well. I remember hearing my first in the 3rd grade, that was eons ago. (that's not including the occasional slip up by parents when they got upset).

I took letters to scout camp from parents.... why? why does a mother need to send a letter to scout camp for her child? He's been gone 2 days!

But then again, these are a lot of the same folks who were happy when LHM removed the movie about the gay cowboys, while they were watching movies like Hostile and Saw II.
So, if I want my kids to turn out to be Fuegote or Clarette, I should let them sit in the potty-mouth sections at sports games? SWEET!

However, where should they sit if I'd rather them turn out to be the next Mitt Romney's, Mother Theresa's or President Hinckley's? Not that there's anything wrong with being a Fuegote or Clarette. I had totally spaced the fact that where they sit in a stadium might affect the master plan I have for their lives!

I was referring to the substitution tactic once in stoppage time. Because of the all the subs I agree there should be added time. But once in added time, we should/could have used the sub to bleed some of that time.

Hey, it was news to me, too. However, the charming individuals around me have informed me otherwise.

They would simply add more stoppage time. The amount of stoppage time is not fixed and can be added to if there are additional delays during stoppage time. Wasting time will add to stoppage time regardless of when you do it. Although I suspect that if you actually counted time lost due to injuries, fouls, goal celebrations, subs, etc., you would end up with about double what the refs give now.

In theory this is how it would work, but it doesn't. There is a reason every coach in the world uses subs to kill time if he has them.

DW and I were expecting like 8 minutes of stoppage time because of the very long time it took for them to evaluate and get Talley off the field. The whole time he was sitting there I was thinking that didn't bode well for stoppage time and how the team handles prosperity late in games. :dog:

Right. In other words if you make a subsitution that takes 45 seconds, more than likely the referee will generally tack on 20 or so seconds of additional extra time, meaning that you bought yourself 25 seconds. Depends on the ref.
