No, but I hope to affect the reality that I see on the field and in the standings by making my views known...

It's pointless to reason with KnowWonNose. At best he's just dumb. At worst he's a troll. Save the energy.

Your views, while true in the respect that this second year team isn't in the top half of MLS teams, is not realistic in respect to the amount of work and the kind of coach that it takes to run a new team in a league like this. Heck, everyone thought Bradley was the savior of Chivas, but even with a huge improvement in talent, they're doing worse than RSL minus one season opener. In other words, your views are wrong in respect to what the team needs.

I'm not saying Ellinger is the greatest coach, but I think he's what the team needs for this year at least. No one else is going to make Harris make better decision. No one else is going to make better staffing decisions when their are still many wholes that need to be filled. No one else is going to make it so Pope and DS aren't gone for a good period of time. This team is good and will win, but hasty moves are usually wrong.

I don't consider myself an expert on what the team needs. One option is reflected in the title of this thread. All I know is that there needs to be a change.

Maybe you weren't here to endure last season. If that's the case then I can understand why you might be willing to endure a mediocre season this year. Most of us here have already been there and done that.

If firing Ellinger isn't the solution, then help me and all of us come up with the solution. As I stated in the last line of my post, something needs to change. I don't know what but something needs to change. The most obvious option to me and others here who endured this same kind of season last year is the coach. I would be very happy to hear other alternatives of what needs to change because I get weary of mediocre play and a mediocre record. Maybe I should have titled this thread "Something has to change" rather than "Fire Ellinger."

I read RSL's press release about Real Madrid coming to Utah. I hear and feel Dave Checketts' commitment to provide world class-level soccer here in Utah. I get excited and I want it to happen. But over the course of a season and a half, I haven't seen it materialize.

That could change very quickly if Chivas win tonight. If they do, they will be one point behind RSL with two games in hand. I suppose you know what that means?

It means that one of the reasons Chivas is only 4 points behind us is because they have played 3 games less. If those 3 games result in victories for them, not only will they jump way up in the standings but they will have 5 points more than RSL.

Bottom line, they aren't worse off than us. On the contrary.

Stop making sense Arelsius. Your logical arguements don't convince me of anything.

I'll say this as careful as I can. I respect your opinion and I hope that you respect mine. I, also, am not an expert on RSL, but I believe that I have studied situations like RSL's enough to know what not to do.

RSL does need change and they don't also. Let me explain.

They do need to get better. They need to work hard to offer a good product to the people of Salt Lake/Utah. If by next year they are not a 50/50 team the fans will stop coming. If this year the fans stop coming because the are a 4th/5th place Western Conf. team, the team needs to consider something more drastic.

Still the better leadership decision is to not panic, look at reality of the difficulty of the situation, and go ahead with what I think is there well conceived plan to make the team a long term contender. In other words, their best plan in my opinion is to stay the course.

Again, I'll explain: Many have complained that Ellinger may have been a good youth coach, but isn't a good MLS coach. To some extent, I think that is true, but not outside of RSL FO's calculation.

What's it take to build a team from nothing. It takes someone who can take youth and make them into great players. Ellinger is experienced at that.

As far a coaching in MLS. Ellinger is getting better at that and in the meantime his youth are maturing.

Look at next year. Look at the youth that will be ready to play with some experience. Mehdi, Harris, Cutler, Forko, Johnson, Novak, Watson... Those are some good players. If RSL would have tried to do it with mature players they may have won a few more by now, but would likely be at best one place higher in the standing and not hope beyond that for next year. Whoever coaches at RSL must be a youth-builder for at least one more season.

If RSL keeps Ellinger, I predict the following outcomes. (Of course this is like a 10 day weather forecast; there are tons of factors that can change.)
2005 5 wins, 5th place finish.
2006 8-10 wins, 4th/5th place finish.
2007 2nd to 4th place finish.
2008 1st/2nd place finish and people will envy the program in SL's new stadium.

If RSL dumps Ellinger, I predict the following...
2006 8-10 wins, 4th/5th place finish
2007 10-11 wins, 4th/5th place finish
2008 10-15 wins, 3rd/5th place finish
2009 more of the same....

Now for the wager...
Nothing serious: I wager that if Ellinger is fired prior to the all-star break, I'll quit posting using knowwonnose for 1 month and instead use the name AreliusIV_knowsRSL. If he is not fired prior to the all-star break you'll use the name knowwonnose_Knows for your ID for 1 month.
