It's not the coach, it's the players. Ellinger did have good stats with the U-17's and why is that??? Because the players listened to him and their egos weren't as big as their pocketbooks.. Example, Williams being pulled and then acting like a spoiled child all week.
I say we give it a little more time.

No really. You are joking right? Please tell me you're joking.

What I had to say makes just as much sense as some of you. All I'm saying is everyone needs to back off the coaches, team, etc. for a while and see what they will do.

Wow...at lease your "we should give it a little more time" comment is debatable.

I'm going to pretend you are not kidding and point out that for the U-17s, Ellinger could hand pick the best soccer players in the country to compete against the CONCACAF minnows. Of course he had good stats...if he didn't he wouldn't have lasted 2 weeks.

With the being said, as soon as the U-17 went up against good team, E's U-17s were widely criticised for being tactically clueless and only winning due to their athleticism and talent. Now that Coach E is playing with a level playing field re talent, (yes, we can debate whether RSL has less talent), his obvious tactical incompentence is coming to the forefront.

How long do you need to "see what they will do"? Are you still waiting to see if maybe BetaMax will win out in the end?

The Reserves are a perfect example right now of what the coaching staff CAN do. I know nothing about coaching but the First team could learn a valuable lesson from the way the Reserves play together..AS A TEAM. The egos of the First team, IMO, have exceeded even their paychecks.

Not surprisingly, Ellinger doesn't manage the Reserve team, Mellor does. Maybe we should give the reigns of the first team to Mellor. It couldn't hurt. What's the worst that could happen? We lose another game?

Too late. He's already signed a contract to coach Seattle University.

Everyone's pleased the reserves are doing well, but you can't judge the varsity by the JV. Anyone remember how our reserves did last year? That's right, they weren't all that great. Anyone remember who won the reserve division last year? DC United. Anyone care?

The point here is that the ability to work with young talent is not the primary job of the first team head coach. It's certainly important for any club to have a good development system, but if that doesn't translate into success with the first team then it serves no purpose.

I've thought for awhile that Ellinger would make a good assistant coach. Head Coach? He's been given a difficult hand to play with an expansion team but, fair or not, the results are clear.

This isn't a matter of a quick trigger or perpetually unhappy fans. We've shown patience in the face of some truly awful soccer and kept coming to games and cheering the team. I don't think it's unreasonable to question a coaching staff as we rewrite the MLS record book for ineptitude. Last year's scoreless streak, an 18 game winless streak (including a 9 straight winless at home), at the bottom of the table, at the bottom in stats for points scored per game, points allowed per game--you get the idea. That's in addition to the lack of basic fundamentals in all areas of play.

The question remains--what are we building here? Where will the current direction take us? That's the basis for any evaluation of the coaching staff. The only question is when the club leadership will determine if the present course is going to result in a successful organization.
