Did Frank Yallop have any head coaching experience when he took over the Earthquakes? Had he even been an assistant anywhere?

I should know this. But I think that Octavio Zambrano's only head coaching experience was with an NCAA Division III school when he took over the Galaxy.

Well, we all know how that turned out. But for a while there, it was at least fun to watch the soccer version of the mid-1980's Denver Nuggets.

We have changed out most of the players. I think it now may be time for a coaching change. I know about the reports about Williams in the paper. I am not sure I quite believe them after last night. Williams didn't seem to be very arrogant after the game. He even bothered to come over and acknowledge the fans...someone even got his jersey. I would wager that the reporter was a bit hard on him. I really don't think Andy is a spoiled brat who won't listen to the coach (if someone else knows differently please speak up). I really hope that your post was in jest and I just took it the wrong way...

Andy has been as far from a spoiled brat as he could have been. He was misquoted - what a shock for a reporter. On the other hand I don't think Andy is the one to pick out of the team for under performing, I don't think he did underperform, I think the team did. I do think scapegoat is a word though.

MLS Cup 98 was won by a team whose coach had a track record of success in the brief history of MLS up to that point and he had success before that (or as much success as anyone could have coaching an Ivy League team) in coaching players old enough to vote.

So your answer would be yes?

In all my time in soccer I have never met anyone who has ever even seriously suggested that.

It is probably just b/c I quite like the style of play from NE, but I would love to see Paul Mariner take over @ RSL. I am not sure that is super realistic though. Would Paul leave what he has w/ Steve Nicol & NE to come coach here? I guess it is worth asking, but I am not optimistic about the answer.

In 1997, the Galaxy continued its fine tradition of blowing Cup Final leads and lost to Cruz Azul in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. But at least they were in the final.

In 1998, Eddie Pope and DCU won the CONCACAF Champions Cup. I think that our Eddie scored the goal that beat the Brazilian team (Vasco?) in the Interamerican Cup final.

Let's flash forward to 2005 & 2006 to the "new and improved" MLS.

KC13 probably has a tape of DC losing 5-0 to UNAM that she can lend you. Unless she wore it out already.

This year, in a game that most people want to forget for reasons much more important than soccer; the Galaxy blew another lead and New England also lost in Costa Rica.

In 1997, players from the Bad Horrifying MLS took a point in the Azteca. Something Bruce Arena hasn't done yet with players from the New Superior MLS.

If we win our World Cup group and go so far into the elimination stage that Jim Rome commits suicide; then, yeah; I'll concede that I was wrong.

Never underestimate the lure of a head coaching job, even if that means leaving a good team for a crappy one. Exhibit A: Brent Guy leaves Arizona St. football (PAC-10) and heads to one of the perennially ****tiest teams in football, Utah St., in one of the perennially ****tiest conferences in football, the WAC. Why did he do it? Because he moved from off. coordinator to head coach.

I think Mariner would be a great head coach for us. I can't say if he'd take the job for sure, but I bet he'd take a good long look at it.

I love Mariner. During the LA/Revs game, Wynalda was commenting that Mariner was recently chosen as one of England's top forwards EVER.

Also, Revs head coach Nicols, has said on several occasions that Mariner is the one who scouts and makes the draft picks for the Revs. Let's see here: Noonan, Dempsey, Parkhurst, Riley...I think Mariner is a decent draft picker, what do you think? 😉

How cool would it be to get him? Wow.

Whether or not Paul is willing to leave, I think he is one of a few interesting possibilities for coaching RSL. Personally, I'm not a fan of bringing Mo Johnston in. I'd rather see Soehn, Bliss or Mariner before Mo.

Mariner does sound like a good replacement for Coach E. But, would we need to get a replacement for Peter Mellor? Doesn't he like follow John around? Who could fill that spot?

Most coaches choose their own assistants, and most go new. It would be up to the new coach who he wants to keep with the club.
