Has anyone seen Willy Wonka?
Is it good enough to spend my money on or should I just wait for the DVD?

You of course mean "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" with Johny Depp.
"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" was Gene Wilder.

My parents and my boss saw it and they said they preferred the Gene Wilder version. But they are old, so they are biased. πŸ˜‰

Both Chocolate Factory movies are quite good IMHO. They are really quite different from one another. Someone I saw the movie with said they didn't think the new movie was any better, but they didn't think it was any worse either. Both of them have their charm.

I'm off to go see it right now, I guess I'll report when I get back.

I think I like the new version better. It certainly jibes with the book better--despite Tim Burton inventing a backstory for Willy. It's just as dark as Roald Dahl, and the Oompaloompas are the right size (NOT "little people"). Plus they're all the same guy, filmed many many many times and then computer-inserted into the scene.

Also: and this is the best part, imho--all the songs are the original lyrics Dahl wrote, interpreted most wondrously by the incomparable Danny Elfman (all voices in the songs are him, as well--he should be doing updated Warner Bros. cartoons). Oh, they make me laugh--especially the Esther Williams-inspired Augustus Gloop song.

Were the Vermicious Knids in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator?

I thought they were morbidly cool when I was little.

They were the ones that spelled S C R A M weren't they?
I think they must have been in the CatGGE. I probably haven't read the sequel since third grade or so.

I think it is good enough to spend your money on. Johnny Depp is fairly reliable and in this role he is great. I think Mr. Burton does a fabulous job of capturing the dark/slightly crazy mood of the book. The oompa loompas and their full-on production numbers are worth the admission in and of itself.

I'm thinking you knew what he meant.

Do your parents prefer the campy style of the seventies to newer movies in all cases, or just this one?
