Actually, I agree. Sandy would be better than Rice Eccles because you don't have to go so far from the main roads, ie I-15. The point is that RSL is leaving Rice Eccles in a few years and so we should be comparing Sandy to possible Murray locations or Downtown Salt Lake. I'll go to any RSL specific stadium. If it were in my backyard I'd go every day. If it were in Brigham City I'd go once a month. Of course there are die hards who come from Idaho and Montana... so, for them if it is in Utah they will be there every week. I think that is great. Rep points for ALL out-of-staters!

But this really isn't about RES vs. Sandy. It's about Dowtown vs. Murray vs. Sandy. IMO, Murray is the best location.

But it's a completely DIFFERENT 12 miles...it's not an EXTRA 12 miles. In other words, with route 2 you'd be traveling the last 20 miles at an average of 70+ mph, while with route 1 it would average significantly lower. By the time you finish route 1 and end up at RES, you'd already be 5 or 6 miles away from Sandy, NOT at RES. So the 144 mph doesn't apply at all. You'd have to travel the remaining 5 or 6 miles in 5 minutes, not 12 miles. Maybe we're saying the same thing, I can't tell. 🙂 The point being that there is almost no (or at least significantly little) time difference in travel between the two locations. Also, to say SLC is more "centrally located" based on population centers than Sandy is untrue. The true geographic balance would likely be somewhere in Midvale. But, I still think it would be best to have a stadium in SLC. It just seems to make it more "legit" to have something downtown with the rest of the big boys, and it certainly would help with the "Salt Lake" brand.

I only made that comparison because you said that a stadium in Sandy would factor into your decision to attend games (because of distance). Since the travel distance is essentially equal to the games we're attending now, I was simply attempting to put it in that perspective. Does the travel distance to RES right now make you think twice about attending? I do agree that the traffic at Sandy would absolutely suck, though. It's not really that great at any time of the day there (106th), and it's a big ol' bottleneck.

I agree 100%. I just wanted to point out (based on your earlier quote "It would be a real shame to build it all the way down in Sandy as that would discourage attendance from the North. I, for one, would be less likely to want to drive all the way down to Sandy from Ogden for every game.") that the difference between the commute you (and others from up north) make now to Rice-Eccles is very similar (in time) to the one you would make should the stadium be built in Sandy. I also would love to see the stadium downtown but the costs of land there compared to other alternatives make it much less appealing from a financial standpoint.

The bottom line is that to really determine the difference, we need to start where the two routes diverge from each other, which would be 4th South exit. And the difference between going to RES from that exit and Southtowne from that exit are probably pretty close based on time needed to get there, even though Southtowne may be longer distance wise. But even that doesn't really tell the whole story. We need to actually look at where the stadium is going to end up since RES is a temporary solution. So, we need to compare Downtown with Murray with Southtowne to really determine this. And no matter what, I think that the bottom line is that the difference can't be more than 15 minutes which doesn't seem like a lot to me. __________________

Yes! that's exactly what the comparison was attempting to do. Quote:
I think we're on the same page here. I don't think that travel time is one of the deciding factors in any of these scenarios as to "which location is the best". Of course, there ARE a bunch of other factors....the two biggest being money and politics.

Although I do hope it ends up downtown. That would be the coolest place for it. __________________

Totally agreed. If there were no other factors involved, I would want it downtown. As it stands, as a fan of the team and of the long-term success of RSL and the league, I just want an SSS quickly, in a relatively accessible location, and without an excess of financial burden. And I want it to look pretty, as well. Am I asking too much?
