There was a point made about how Run DMC, Beastie Boys, et al came before Eminem and how the Beatles did the same thing. This is true. The Beatles were influenced by the likes of Buddy Holly, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Little Richard, Lonny Donegan, Carl Perkins, and Chuck Berry, all of whom are good in their own right, but the Beatles conglomerated these sounds and invented their own sound. I'm not familiar enough with Eminem to know if he's done this. The Beatles also crossed many genres and I'm not sure Eminem has done this. In fact, I'm not sure any band beside The Beatles (with the possible exception of U2) has done this. I just want to state for the record that I too, do not have any agenda. I am not trying to push any band, I'm just interested in your opinions because this is something I've often wondered about and it's interesting to get different points of view from people in different walks of life. As I was typing this Garth Brooks came to mind. Okay, he's not really Rock and Roll and he's not a band, but he did some innovative things that got Country into the mainstream kind of like the Beatles did with Rock and Roll.

I was joking by the way. Hasn't anyone seen "Dumb and Dumber"?

The Beatles had multiple songs in the Billboard Top 40 at the same time. In fact I think they might have even had ten songs in the Billboard top 10 at the same time, but I'm not certain of this. Hey Jude was on the Billboard charts from 1968 to 1974. The Beatles sold out every venue when they were touring. More people in the world knew who the Beatles were than knew who Mickey Mouse was. This is the kind of scope of their influence. Has any American band come close to this? I'm talking bands, not individuals. I think Elvis and Michael Jackson came close, maybe even Whitney Houston and Maddonna, but is there an American band that has even come close to doing the same thing?

No. I don't think there has been, so I'll go back and stick with my original response which is that there is no American Beatles.

I think you're right, so now it just boils down to everyone's opinion of who they think is great. My list of the most influencial/prolific American bands are:

1. The Doors
2. The Grateful Dead
3. The Beach Boys
4. The Ramones
5. The Eagles
6. The Velvet Underground
7. Creedence Clearwater Revival
8. Nirvana
9. R.E.M.
10. Iggy and The Stooges (Iggy Pop)
