Yeah, don't count on Thatcher playing much this year after that one. Hell he may end up in prision because of that particular one. Still not sure about just a yellow for that.

Seriously ugly! Hope there was a fine given by the league after a review of the tapes.

Forget the fine, I hope this dude is suspended for like 3 months, if he's even allowed to play this year. From what I've been reading, this guy has a Materazzi type history of being a dirty player, with another similar tackle earlier this month.

I don't understand why they don't think the police should get involved. If someone breaks the law during a game does that fact that a game is going on grant immunity to the player? That semed like a pretty clear case of assault. Some roughing up is ok, but that was a punch thrown with a body running full speed behind it. If that happened on the street, that guy would be in the klink.

The incident was the second time in as many months that a Thatcher elbow had hospitalized an opponent, following an incident in a pre-season tour of China. The player isn't new to controversy as he has produced similar challenges against Nicky Summerbee (playing for Wimbledon against Sunderland) and Allan Nielsen of Spurs.

Which was worse - Keane's tackle on Haaland or Thatcher's tackle on Mendes?

All this talk about bad tackles reminds us of Roy Keane's revenge-challenge on Alfie Haaland (which ended Haaland's career). It was a disgraceful tackle.

In 1997, after Haaland caught Keane above the knee in a hard tackle Keane attempted to foul Haaland and in the process injured his cruciate ligament.

As Keane lay prone on the ground, Haaland taunted him by implying that Keane deserved the injury as punishment for his reckless tackle. Three and a half years later, in 2001, the pair played their first game against one-another since Keane's injury. During the game Keane made a knee-high tackle on Haaland, according to his biography, out of vengeance.

Allegedly, Keane said, "I'd waited long enough. I hit him hard. Take that, you c**t. And don't ever stand over me again sneering about fake injuries." Keane admitted in his autobiography that the tackle was deliberate.

All I can say is, we thought Atiba was bad...
Forget the ban for life, throw the thug in prison. I'm sure all the Liverpool fans there would just love some fresh meat.

Sporting events are sanctioned forms of violence. Laws are passed to allow the events to go on. Sanctioning bodies govern the conduct on the field of play and that is considered sufficient. The most extreme form in modern sport is boxing and judo. I don't know that 'extreme' fighting is legal in all states. Fight clubs are generally *not* legal because it falls outside any apparent governance.

Presumably, soccer governs misbehavior such that a player who can't control his injurious behavior is sanctioned (the yellow card accumulation system) and eventually may be suspended or banned, I guess.

Anyone ever heard of a soccer player being banned from play for anything more than a few games for violent play? Bans for drugs and racism is all I can find.

Not in soccer, but in hockey, Todd Bertuzzi's sucker punch that broke Steve Moore's neck got him banned for a year and he did face criminal charges. Here is some footage of that. It seems about as bad as what Thatcher did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0FBECwYHbkBertuzzi Hit
