By the way, did the team seem to actually know how to play soccer last night? I'm sure it must be some kind of optical illusion, but it seemed to me they played a very good game. And they never gave up at the end.

And was that the worst ref in the league or what?

The first half of the game was typical...missed shots on goal..the second half was starting off the same way...so what happened in the last 10 minutes that brought the game to life... whatever it was, we need it every game but sooner....

Does anyone know what that DC United defender was not thrown out of the match when he cold-****ed Jamie Watson?

I couldn't believe that he got off with just a yellow - and one on Jamie too??!!

What a complete thug! I hope he's suspended for mulitple games (10+). I'm sure RSL has already sent film to the league to deal with this. But he was completely bush-league. I was amazed at how calm RSL remained. There was some shoving and yelling, but that could have turned real ugly real fast.

It should make for an interesting return trip to DC.

We could have had 3 PKs in the final five minutes. I was upset when we didn't get the second call. But I can see the ref not wanting to decide the game. But he couldn't let the third one go.

On a similar note, I completely disagree with that notion of not calling it. You ref the game not the score.

Yeah, Wilson should've been red carded. He caused both PK's for us, and punched Jamie right in the face.

Up until the 88th minute, horrible refreeing. Atrocious. Within the first 5 minutes, RSL had seven calls against them. DC had one. Ridiculous. Ben Olsen is one of the worst divers in the league, along with Jaime and El Pescadito.

my only guess is that he knew the game was about to end (like right after the pk) and saw no sense in sending him off with 5 secs to go. However, it should stilll have been a red, as he needs the punishment for a red (fines and suspension)

Referees are always reluctant to call PKs. Too controversion, and too likely to cause a goal. But the ones that were called, were just SOOOO bad that he couldn't avoid them.

I'm not saying that is the correct attitude, but it is pretty universal among refs.

The altercation occurred right in front of the Loyalists section. Jamie and Wilson had been exchanging words and Wilson swung and struck Jamie right in the face. Distracted by DCU players arguing about the penalty, the referee simply did not see it, while it was in plain view of the linesman who immediately called over the referee to tell him about it.

At that point the linesman can explain what he saw and can recommend a red card or only a yellow card, but the referee has the power to do as he pleases. At it stands, it made no difference on the outcome of the match as the final whistle was blown right after the winning PK. If the league has film capturing the incident I would expect Wilson to be punished. Keep in mind that being away from the focal point of the action at that point, film of the punch may not be available and it may have been seen only by those at the stadium. At least the referee didn't decide to red both players, in which case a suspension for the next game for Jamie would be automatic with no chance for appeal.

Gotta give big KUDOS to the crowd for staying with the team last night. In the closing minutes with RSL still down 1-0, the crowd was going bonkers and a few times on corner kicks, most of the fans were standing up, even those in the $$$$$ seats on the shady west side.
