i'll admit straight up i got to page 4 and got sick of all the fighting between people so stopped reading and came to post so apologies if this has already been answered or if this is just a dumb question.
Why the deadline? Aren't there teams that have been around longer than RSL that still don't have an SSS. I know San Jose moved due to an inability to get one .... but that shouldn't be an issue here yet as we're still looking at new ways to fund the stadium or where to place it. Setting a deadline this early on just seems like "i'm bored of trying to make this work" but thats my uneducated view.

I believe MLS makes all new franchises agree to have a SSS plan in place within X number of years. RSL is also under pressure to get out of RES because the stadium is in danger of losing it's nonprofit status if RSL stays there longer than the current 3 year lease.

xlyte: I think much of this is dependent on the question of "Where will RSL play in 2008 if we don't have our own stadium built?" Checketts has said that RES is absolutely not an option. We assume that is because of the tax-exempt status of RES being in danger if RSL stays there, but it could also play into profit ratios and that kind of thing. So if they don't get started around August to build this thing, it won't be done in time for the 2008 "deadline". That's my take on it.

The Arizona Cardinals played in Sun Devil Stadium for many years and I'm not aware of Arizona State losing its tax exempt status. The Raiders and the Rams at various times played in the government-owed LA Coliseum. Mexican national team games in the Coliseum generate a heck of a lot of money and nobody is talking about removing tax exemptions.
The 1996 Columbus Crew were selling lots of tickets in Ohio State's stadium. Jon Huntsman and the state legislature could easily solve any problems related to Rice Eccles, if Checketts asked them to. The government owned E Center and Franklin Covey facilities sell beer. So could Rice Eccles. During the Olympics, you could buy wine at City Hall. If it's a federal tax issue, Orrin Hatch can make it go away. Orrin can overturn other country's drug laws. What's MLS going to do if we don't have a stadium within their "deadline"? For every Bridgeview or Frisco, there are 5 San Antonios.

I think it's a state law issue, and I'm not sure what MLS would do if we didn't get it done soon. To be honest, I don't really want to test them.

I don't either. But from Checketts, we hear a lot of "they're picking on me" and "it's everybody's fault but mine" and not much "we're going to do everything we can to work with people whose outlook is different than mine" If my 4-year-old whined like Checketts does, she'd be on the Time Out Bench until she's eligible for social security.
