Yup. If we can't beat a team that's playing its third match in a week, at home, at altitude, we're ****edola (asterisks added by me, not the filter).

You just nailed it right there. The fact is, no matter what the problem(s) is/are with the team, almost everything that could possibly go wrong in soccer can be traced back to the coach. An example: Let's say you've got a forward who can't finish. The gut reaction is to blame the player. But ask yourself, WHY can't he finish? Are his mechanics bad? Then the coach needs to work with him on that. Is he injured? Then the coach shouldn't be playing him. Is he being played in the wrong position? Obviously this is the coach's deal. Or is he just a flatout crappy soccer player? If that's the case, the coach shouldn't have brought him on.

Again, this is just an example (poor as it may be) of how crap rolls uphill in soccer. Even if the player's at fault, the coach ultimately is responsible, whether that's fair or not. Coaches know this and accept it.....I'm a coach and I catch tons of **** when my boys perform badly.

Also, I find it ironic that some of you are ready to keelhaul Bruce Arena for his mistakes, but are willing to defend Ellinger (who has a much worse record) for making the same ones. I'm not telling you how you should feel, just making an observation.

Bruce is in a different boat. He was managing the highest soccer event for the nation, and choked. That's different than an MLS coach have a tough go at it during the regular season.

Yeah, but we COULD lose to VA Beach, and that would suck.

Oh, I get it. Bruce deserves to go because he blew the important games. I think I'm starting to see Ellinger's strategy.....make sure RSL doesn't do well enough to get into any important games, then your job is never in danger. Genius, pure genius.

He's choking 1.5 seasons so far.

You're reading more into what I was saying.

First of all, I should say that I'm not necessarily a fan of firing Bruce Arena. Secondly, if Coach E fails to get us into the Play-offs again this year, I'll hop on the "Fire Coach E" bandwagon. Lastly, based on the expectations for this team this year, it was Arena's job to get that team into the second round, or at least die trying. Neither were accomplished. In fact, overall, they sucked it up hard. That was his one and only job. He failed, therefore, I can see how people would want him to be fired. Coach E's job isn't to win all his regular season games, and not even necessarily half of them. Coach E's job this year, IMO, is to get his team into the play-offs. He hasn't failed in that regard yet - though with each loss it becomes more and more difficult.

That's why those two are in different boats.

Was it his job to get RSL into the play-offs last season? Probably not. Which is why he is still coaching. Therefore, you can't say he has failed 1.5 (actually 1.4375) seasons. He is failing .4375 seasons and that's not a whole failure yet. You can't even round that up to a whole failure yet. 😉

LOL... why when I read this do I get a picture in my head of a man leaning over a fathomless precipise with one tiny string in each hand connected to an anchor in the distance and the sound of the strings splitting between the man and the anchor? twang... twang... twang...
