I guess I should retract that statement about Brazil - I haven't seen them play for a few years. They used to be a really high tempo team - during World Cup '94 I got tired just watching them.

1. The amount of back passing, working the U-shape back through the defenders is a giveaway.
2. Ellinger himself said so back when he was hired.

But I agree, it's hard to tell what scheme they're running given the bad execution. I think the players are to blame, maybe the coach is to blame for not instructing the players correctly. But I believe Ellinger's strategy is sound - it's the rest of what he's doing that might not be so sound.

By strategy, I assume you are referring to his choice of offense. What might be some examples of what would the "rest" might consist of?

1. Can he motivate his players? Does he know how to push their buttons to get them to perform? I don't see that killer instinct right now.
2. Is he a good in-game coach? Granted you can't do tons of that in soccer, but it would do my heart a lot of good to see him up off the bench yelling at some people.
3. Can he make halftime adjustments? Sunday there wasn't much different in the 2nd half.
4. What's up with that defense? There's no marking off the ball and everyone is ballwatching. These are basics.
5. Can he identify what needs work and address it? We'll find out.

Every week I'm leaning more towards wanting him gone but it's got nothing to do with his offensive philosopy.

I don't particularly care for said attacking style, so I might be biased, but if your players clearly can't execute a particular style, then shouldn't you try something different?

It almost seems like he's running a style based off of the players that he wishes he had, rather than the ones he has... when I think of Andy Williams and Jeff Cunningham at their most effective, I don't think of square balls in the middle third.

But that's just me.

On Cunningham I agree with you. But what have you seen in Williams to make you think he'd thrive in an uptempo offense? Once upon a time I heard he was fast but I've yet to see it. What I see is him holding the ball for 5 seconds with his back to the goal.....hardly a skill an uptempo team looks for. So no, I don't think RSL is running the wrong offense, given the personnel. Yes, Cunningham is an uptempo player. But who else do we have that could fit that role? Kreis? Klein? Watson? He's got energy but lacks the footwork. So based on who we've got (Cunningham being the exception), I think this offense is right for us. The execution simply needs to improve.

I've seen him playmake through the center with some nice, quick diagonal passes when he was with other teams... he also did some nice things for us on the left when we got the ball out wide quickly and didn't have to wait for seven teammates to catch up with him so he could play a square ball.

I wish I could remember the exact games so I could look for some video, but I'm trying to repress all of my memories of last year.
