after all the good things i read about this movie i decided to rent it. what a terible decision that was. the characters are horrible and the story has little to recommend it. i never saw the tv show, nor will i never see. the dialogue was wretched too. give me blade runner or star trek tng any day of the week. if fan support is anything to base a movie on i hope that arrested development gets a movie and a move to showtime as has been reported.

Firefly/Serenity >>>>> Star Trek TNG/Generations/First Contact/etc.

Not that TNG was bad at the time, but it doesn't hold up well. Watching it now is cringe-worthy (Unlike DS9). Maybe we'll say the same thing about Firefly in 20 years.

So i'm almost done watching Serenity, one of the finer films of last year IMO (batman begins is going to be pretty hard to dethrone).

Is it worth buying the series so I can watch it? I'm just amazed at how great this movie is.

I definitely recommend the series...
I cannot believe that the series was cancelled after one season and stuff like survivor and idol keep getting renewed every year... goes to show that the average tv viewer would rather be treated like a complete idiot, than have to think.

Absolutely, if anything Serenity is a step down from Firefly. Not that there's anything wrong with Serenity, but Joss was forced to set up the characters and 'verse as well as deliver a full story in just 2 hours. It's much easier to do that over 15 hours of TV.

If you do watch, be aware that IMHO 3 of the first 5 episodes are the worst of the series (The Train Job, Bushwacked, and Safe), so if you feel like it's a slow start, keep going. The good news is that the other two (the pilot, which is named Serenity, and Shindig) are two of the better episodes.

I have been in the online serenity/firefly communities for awhile now. some interesting new has been coming out recently. there is a possibility the there will be 2 sequals to serenity that could go straight to TV. most likley Showtime.

also there has been intrest in more of the series being filmed and broadcast through 'alternative media' like webcasts/podcasts kinda thing.

I loved this series, although a couple were too western for me. but would really like to see it reborn.

Jaynes town was my favorite episode. I liked the Train one too JasonMa.

i couldn't disagree with you more. I'm a TNG fan, huge fan, but it have any legs to stand on when comparing it to serenity. the movie was one of the more original, innovate movies of '05 and the effects were superb without taking over the story (something ol' lucas should have figured out by now).

i will be renting/buying the series. I have to watch how they got where they are.

If I may quote Sideshow Bob "...it could have spewed from the powerbook of the laziest Hollywood hack. "
The premise is tired and has been done better in other movies. Something that is supposed to be a weapon, but doesn't want to be and people are chasing after it: Blade Runner, Iron Giant, even Disney stepped in and did Lilo and Stitch. The tough lipped captain is totally hackneyed. It has been done a million times. Everyone is trying to imitate Clint Eastwood who was copying Toshiro Mifune. They don't match up. And then there is the rest of the characters, I think their names were bland, blah, and meh. Not much to get excited about. I had high hopes for the movie. I had heard a lot about it and had high expectations. Maybe if i hadn't heard anything I wouldn't have been so disappointed. Most science fiction is terrible so anything decent is a notch above the rest. I never watched the tv series so I don't know the backstory which may have added a lot. For me TNG has a place in my heart and Picard is the man. After watching some episodes of TNG I wanted to talk about the ideas behind the story. That was why the first Matrix was so good (well the special effects were cool too, and the martial arts). Serenity never made me want to do that.
But as it has been said, no one ever put up a statue of a critic. At least they made the movie. I just complain about them.

I think Firefly is/was one of the greatest shows ever aired on TV. I would highly recommend that everyone watch it and I hope beyond hope that it somehow gets picked up again and the 'verse can continue on.
