Well then I really think it's a bad idea for them to hand them out. I really don't want guys spraining their ankels on a streamer. I think that the FO needs to higher people to roll streamers that are just the right length to unroll all the way, that way none of the guys can get hurt but we still get the awesome visual look.

If something needs to be thrown up in the air, I'd go for confetti. But I'm not all that into that either. For visuals, I prefer stuff that stays in the crowd and can be reused, like banners, flags, or those college-like card sections you see in Italy.

Maybe it's because way back in my college days I worked at a stadium, but anything that goes on the field or requires a major cleanup in the stands just isn't what I want to see. That goes extra for flares or other props that foul up the air.

So for me personally--and I understand others will have a different view--I'd prefer to stay away from streamers and confetti.

I voted for confetti, but that mainly goes down to the fact that of the two choices it is the less likely to negatively effect play on the field. I do not really have strong feelings on the matter. Its funny, Rover, you mention that cleanup aspect of things because as I was going over this in my head I got the mental image of some disgruntled stadium employee sweeping up streamers and confetti, cursing those darned soccer fans. 😉 Personally, I don't see why we need various forms of brightly colored paper to create a good atmosphere, but if it is an idea people are attached to I'm certainly not going to argue the point.

I voted for nothing because as good as the streamers look and as fun as the confetti is, I don't think we should throw things on the field. Regardless of whether throwing streamers encourages people to throw bottles, I think anything on the field is a bad idea. Do we throw things at basketball games, football (pointyball) games, hockey games, baseball games, lacrosse games, ping pong games? .... okay... we are at a soccer game, and soccer is better than all those. Whoopity doo. I guess its okay for soccer fans to put stuff on the field to injure their team, whereas other sports are so boring because they can't throw stuff on the field. It doesn't make sense.

I figure it simply:
* can a streamer get in the way of an RSL player... yes.

If that picture was in front of the goal in the 90th minute and it made it so the other team scored the winning goal..... unlikely? Yes. Is it distracting? Probably. Could it injure someone? Possibly.

* Is it against Rice Eccles policy to bring in and throw things on the field? I think so.

* Will other people keep throwing things even if the supporters do not?
Yes, but at least we won't be the ones hurting our team physically (most important) and PR-wise (a nice touch).

Anyhow, I won't throw things. Anybody else can do as they please. =)

Amen and amen. Does it really take the team to lose a game or heaven forbid a player before people wake up to the fact that this is not a smart move to throw anything on to the pitch? Good grief people.

Confetti and Long Ribbons..

When a goal is scored in San Jose or the Home Depot Center, there is a blast of confetti shot out from above. It appears to come from somewhere around the Press/Announcer's box. It looks great on TV.

Also, as vehemently opposed as I am to "anything Chivas", their solid fan unit stands and holds onto these long ribbons--that run from the top of the fan section to the botton. As the fans jump and bounce around, so do these long ribbons. It looks pretty good and I don't think it obstructs anyone's view.

They really aren't ribbons, they are long and wide, but I don't know what else to call them.

Cleaning up the confetti shouldn't be a big thing. They must have some kind of massive vacuum cleaner that could clean it up, at least I would think so.......

I wonder if they would let me borrow it, or at least tell me where they got it!! You should see the floors in this place when the kids get a hold of a box of cereal or packages of Top Ramen :gossip: :glare:

I like the steamer/banners/whatever that the Chivites use, too. They look cool and I'd love for us to do that, too.

<crazy idea>We could create quite a name for ourselves by celebrating with blowing bubbles onto the field in celebration... think about it. They look interesting, they're easy to do, cheap, no cleanup, they're not going to get in anybody's way. They might be a minor distraction to the team, but only if like everybody in the entire stadium was doing it. I think I'll bring bubbles next time I think of it.</crazy idea>

I know this is a crazy idea and "cheesy" but it would be fun nonetheless. We could create quite a name for ourselves by celebrating by blowing bubbles onto the field in celebration... think about it. I thought this was a great idea the first time it came up. Yeah, it's lame and cheesy and corny, but you're right. No clean-up, looks cool, won't hurt the players, doesn't block anybody's views, cheap if you go to the dollar store... It would be cool, but only if enough people will do it. So come on guys!!! Either we all do it or none of us do it! Are ya with me???

Edit: Oh, and it's not throwing anything!!! SO all you people that don't think we should throw stuff this gets the same cool visual without ANYTHING going onto the pitch.

I am. But, you know... that's obvious. 😉

If we bring them, people will join us. If only I had time to get out of the house and go shopping now. YOu can buy things of bubbles for like 4/$1 if you watch sales.
