Which stadium site do you prefer? Which stadium site do you prefer? We've had lots of discussion. I want to get an idea of how many people are leaning each direction.

I like Murray, I just think it is more realistic.

I'm all for Murray. It's closer for me. It avoids the downtown traffic. It's close to Trax. Etc.
I see lot's of advantages, but I don't see any real disadvantages.

Murray is crap! 🙂 We'll get a lot less walk-in tickets in Murray. People come to Salt Lake for the day, they go shopping, go to an Art Gallery, go to Temple Square, by the end of the day they go get something to eat and maybe catch a soccer game.
Murray is like Deleware, there's nothing to do there. If the stadium is downtown where most of this states cultural and recreational activities are, there is more chance that as someone is going to or from an event that they might say "Hey, looks like there's a soccer match going on, wanna go?" I understand those of you in Utah County wanting it just a little bit closer, but it's not that much closer and I'm just not seeing the benefits. People keep talking about benefits, yet, I haven't heard any.

Only if there is adequate parking, onsite. In Salt Lake, anywhere you go, you gotta worry about parking (unless you take Trax, but then how close is the nearest Trax stop). If you drive to SLC for the day and you want to attend an event, and there's a lot right there to pull into, okay. But if you have to drive around looking for a parking lot, never mind we'll come another time. You gotta be motivated, to do that.
Those of us who are die hards will endure most anything (grumbling all the way). But walk-ins? No way. They have to have onsite parking, and that just isn't going to happen in SLC. There's not enough room for it. The Murray site has room enough. And the Murray site is right next to the Trax, so there's no difficulty finding the game from there. Not any use to us Southerners, but helpful for others.

I'm still sitting on the fence. My head says Murray but my heart says SLC. I'm from Utah County but I don't care about the travel either way.

I am not sure that "walk up" ticket buyer is being adequately defined... I am of the understanding that "walk up" does not mean literally only walking up and buying a ticket. The season tickets, groups and discounts are adequately mentioned but I think that the definition of "walk up" includes all others including "non-day of event" purchases, ticketmaster(hiss...hiss) purchases, people that can't afford season tickets, but are regular attendees, and any other ticket buyer that does not fit into the other categories. I believe that "walk up" is a catch all category. So if you consider this, then "walk up" purchases will be considerably higher. The Trax system runs right next to both of the proposed stadium sites in Downtown and there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of parking spaces in many downtown lots. I am sure they will build some new as well. I think the only benefit to having the stadium in Murray as opposed to downtown is that in Murray the design could be made to appear more open and spacious. that is it! One site does not hold any more benefit than the other so it is truly a matter of which gets approved and which city wants it more than the other. My preference and vote would go to Downtown... but I will go to Murray if I have to... :p

Murrey is best! Downtown parking is not on site! Its scattered and expensive. A whole block, even multistory story, parking facility will be needed, but at best is city ugly. Will Hizzoner really want a Tax Negative (subsidised) stadium on prime downtown land that could generate real taxes? Mayor Rockey may be faced with Street Closures around the stadium for Security reasons during events (read city Police co$t). It could mean 12 blocks surrounding the stadium, having all traffic local and through (as in travel to RES on 4th South) detoured around. Remember the Olymipics and the Pedestrian Only Zone and how it killed resturant sales and kept the regulars out of town. That kind of scene is devastating to the Sales Tax paying neigborhood businesses. The very people the stadium would be financed to prop up.
Do people linger after a game when the traffic is a mess or do they rush to get out first? Consider weeknights and early church meetings do play a part here. Does anybody have a remote idea on the all day visitor numbers that would: 1) Go to a soccer game if they discovered it when the got in town? 2) Spent the rest of the day Shopping and Touristing Downtown when the come to SLC for a soccer game? 3) How much would each type spend? As in Sales Taxes and special subsidy surtaxes? And further: 4) What are the demographics of the populations of each? Will they take 5 kids to a Fast Food place or will the 1 or 2 of them want a booze encounter, either Dive or Fine Resturant? 5) How many soccer fans will make purpose trips to Salt Lake to attend Real games? Two bus loads from Denver? Maybe Galaxy, Chivas and SJ buses or air packages? 6) How far will people walk around Downtown to get to a Real game? 4 blocks (half mile) or 8 blocks (a mile) and back at 10:30 at night? How many would use TRAX, bus or taxi? Jazz experiance might help here. Don't consider yourself, consider who actually has come to Sting, Freezz and Blitzz games. Then find out (quess) where the rest of the Fans will come from? Until there are real numbers a lot of ideas are premature.

I would go point for point like I did over on BS in reply to your post there but instead I will just put a link to that thread. I am not trying to flame your post, this is a friendly debate and should remain so, but if you want to make such broad statements you should at least reference supporting info for such statements. I admire your passion but when stating your 'opinions' you should not present them as fact or try to belittle all other persons with similar passions and a differing opinion. The part I can't get my head around is where you seem to imply that downtown will cease to function, or everyone will be stranded and/or mugged if the stadium is built there... Have you ever actually been downtown? Last edited by Deuce : 12-18-2004 at 11:13 PM.
