Christmas traffic is a beast of its own though. You can't say that driving's going to be that bad every time RSL plays... I mean, people were acting like psychopaths in the Sandy BigLots parking lot on Saturday because they're so insane at Christmas, after all.

If the argument against downtown is that people don't "know" what there is to offer in Salt Lake, how is Murray going to be any better? I mean, Nordstrom closes at 9 pm, Costco closes at 8:30, and the closest decent bar I know of is at least a 15 minute drive without sickening traffic on 45th or 53rd unless you're into Northern Xposure which I'm definitely not...

But then again, I'm totally and completely biased. I wouldn't live any further south than 3900 South if I had my way.

The idea is that most of us aren't going into town to hang out... we're going to see a soccer game and then go home! Many of us don't have time to go to a soccer game, then go to a bar, then catch a movie, then do some shopping... we have other parts of our life as well! We'll go to the game, LOVE IT, then go home! I for one could care less what else is available near the stadium. It could be out in the middle of Lehi and think it was great as long as the parking and travel were reasonable.

Ha ha.. that's not what I meant! I meant simply that those of us coming from the UC are already committing a minimum of four hours to get to soccer games, two hours of game time and at LEAST two hours of travel/park time. Most of us can't make soccer an all-day commitment... in fact, I'm lucky to have a husband who's willing to let me make it a four hour commitment! With three kids at home, I'll be pressed to make my trips as simple and quick as humanly possible.

If I were to have time to have dinner or do something like that, I'd be just as happy to do that at 106th south as I would anywhere near the stadium. That's what happens when you have to travel south out of town anyway.

I'm on the fence

45th South is the exit I take every morning. When there is traffic, I would much rather be on 6th South any day of the week (which explains my 9:30 to 3 work, schedule, but that's another story). RSL won't be pulling in the traffic that the lights on temple Square, shopping, and the Conference Center traffic will. Downtown should be able to handle the RSL traffic any any given Sat night in the summer. Whereas, 45th South will be a nightmare. I still think their are some advantages to the Murray site, but I'm starting to lean more and more towards downtown.

p.s. montgjules, I'm sorry to hear about your last night out before bedrest. 🙁

This brings up a very good point and that is that the amount of traffic encountered by Jules is by no means a regular occurrance for Downtown... well not regular in the sense that it only happens every Christmas Season. Friday and Saturday nights are traditionally the busiest nights in downtown NOW add to that the lights at Temple Square, which bring in hundreds of thousands of visitors to downtown in the space of one month.
Also add to that, Christmas Shoppers and the further addition of a Tabernacle Chior performance... then the normal Saturday night traffic... holy cow there is no wonder you could not move downtown...
I sympathize with your bad night out Jules, I have had quite a few of those in my time, not in the same condition but the results were the same. I hope the doc lets you get out a little bit in the next several months.

For the soccer season... April to November... we are looking at 2, maybe 4, days that will be even remotely close to that amount of traffic. I am just thinking of 4th and 24th of July and maybe Memorial & Labor Day and that will only be a factor if any of those days fall on a Saturday. I may be missing some important nights so please let me know if I am.

It is going to be fun to see how all this stadium stuff pans out!
I still like the idea of a stadium downtown but like I have said many times... I will go to where ever the team plays.

Well I am from the UC and I plan on taking trax. If you have a hard time parking, just take trax, it's way easier and I believe there are stations very near all the proposed sites in SLC. Subruban sprawl is ugly and has no atmosphere. Urban stadium = cool atmosphere. Just take trax and leave your car at the southernmost trax station.

I want rep for reading Jules' post. hehe.

I can understand your frustration with downtown last night, but you openly admitted that part of the problem was your own unfamiliarity with the SLC downtown area.

Also, we keep talking about the people from UC driving far, but my brother in law will drive to each game from Logan, so he has little sympathy.

But that's the point. People comming from out of town, whether north, south, east or west. People who aren't familiar with SLC, who don't know where the parking lots are. People who can barely find the stadium, because they looked it up at MapQuest.com.

Juliana had a bad experience, and she HAD A PARKING SPACE. If she had been lost and looking for a parking space, you could easily add another 15-20 minutes to that (And someone would have probably died! 😉 ). The frustration would probably mean that they just wouldn't come to anymore games.

Granted the traffic was inflated due to the seasonal events, but that's not much off the frustration level for an out-of-towner comming to such an event, even on a normal night.

If he doesn't feel the same, then he must come to SLC fairly often. You ask him how he felt the first couple of times. How easy it was to find parking, etc.
