I am apprehensive about the bag over the head deal. I can just see the newspaper grabbing a picture of this and misconstruing this as the loyal fans being embarassed of our team.

But we ARE embarrassed!! Still Loyal, but embarrassed. I do the same thing when my kid's screw up at their recitals and plays and stuff - so why not at RSL games?!?!?

Doesn't it kind of fly in the face of the attitude that "I'm Salt Lake 'til I die"? And "I'll support the team no matter what"? And "I'm not a fairweather fan that can only be proud of my team when they are winning"?

Do you think that putting a bag on your head will help the team or make them feel even worse? I'd much rather do something to lift the team up rather than making them think that even their most "loyal" fans are deserting them now too. I know I won't be putting any bag over my head at any time even if they don't score a goal for the rest of the season.

How 'bout a paper bag with a smiley face? 🙂

You put a paper bag on your head when your kids screw up? 🙂 You know I'm just kidding.

By the way, what is the difference between 🙂 and :D ?

I guess if that works for you. I know that I will never be embarrassed to be a Real Salt Lake fan.

And I'm certainly not going to do anything that will hurt the chances of the team doing better. Do you really think the team will be bouyed up by seeing their fans, especially what are supposed to be their most "loyal ones, with bags on their head? What message do you hope to send by doing it? What about to the rest of the crowd? What are they going to think if the "die-hard" fans are giving up on the team? To me, the message is that we will support you proudly when you are winning, but don't really want to be associated with you at all when you are losing and can't score. I'm going to stay in the group that says I'll cheer loudly and proudly for you no matter what your record is. You really find out who the true and loyal fans are when a team goes through really tough times.

Of course, this is all just my opinion. You guys do what you feel you have to do to help the team win.

I may be wrong, but I think it was just a joke. I don't think that anyone will really put bags on their face. At least I hope not.

But I will be happy when we score. My prediction: RSL 2, galazy 1.

I could just as easily turn this on it's head. Is one REALLY a Salt Lake fan if they do not openly express outrage at the current state of affairs?

I think what Chicago's Section 8 did in mid April was brilliant. For those who don't know, Section 8 is a true supporters club in every sense of the word, probably the best one in MLS. And not only did the media notice it (and do a great job explaining it), the MLS leadership took notice as well.

We aren't in the same situation here, but there is nothing wrong with a supporters club having a coordinated effort to express dissent at the team's direction. 1 minute of bags over the head would be perfect. Will it make the team feel bad? Well, I sure hope so.

In a capitalist analysis: the team is putting a product on the field. If that product was a bowl of soup at a restaurant I would send it back, not eat it because otherwise the chef might feel bad. If I really loved the restaurant I would be especially certain to send it back with some detailed comments out of fear that the kitchen didn't know that people were noticing their lousy product and were likely to stop patronizing the restaurant.

Publicize that you are going to do that, but also publicize at the same time that you will have a special celebration when the team finally scores in the north goal. Put on Santa (north pole) hats or something.

Well said.

I realize the whole paper bag thing is probably just a joke, and that's fine.

Whatever the case, as an RSL supporter I'm with my team--win or lose. That means I won't be hiding myself to avoid the association. That's something I personally would never do, even for laughs.

Of course I'm only going to make it up from SoCal for one game this year, so take that for what it's worth.
