The epicenter was in the Santa Cruz mountains, not too far from where I was living.
At the time of the quake I was in the apartment getting ready to go to dinner. It was weird because right before the quake hit, my companion and I looked at each other and then the shaking started. We dove under the desk...it felt like someone had the apartment complex in their hand and was slamming it into the ground from side to side. The other missionaries in the apartment tried to get to a door jam. It seemed to last forever, but in reality probably only lasted about 20 seconds. After the quake was finished, we went outside to see what was going on. There was a swimming pool just ouside our door and it was still sloshing water and was now less than half full. Luckily there wasn't much damage in the neighborhood. Some items in the apartment fell to the ground, and some cracks showed up in the walls. But, San Francisco didn't fare too well. Many of you may remember that part of the Bay Bridge collapsed and a long portion of the double-decker Nimitz Freeway in Oakland collapsed on top of itself, crushing many people. Many buildings were destroyed from the shaking and from fires that started. Over the next couple days there were smaller after-shocks.
That is the biggest quake i've been in. |
That was a serious quake. I was in Florida at the time, but I lived in the Bay Area for a time growing up so I knew all the places that had the worst damage. Not a good day for the Bay Area.
