In this case, I am someone who runs several forums using vbulletin, (and who has extensive experience in software development). Look at the original post, it didn't say "hey jerk, you suck, do this". It was a suggestion posted in the suggestions area. It followed conventional service request format even, brief and to the point, as few extraneous words as possible.

What amazes me about this thread is all the people who claim to only want to read about RSL stuff participating. Do you really think essential RSL stuff is going to be posted in Real Salt Lake Forums > The Management > Suggestions ?

And for the record, when people who are less qualified than I am comment on my teaching (and at the end of every semester I solicit such comments as all good teachers do) I carefully consider their comments and keep those that are valid, and dismiss those that are not.

I don't recall saying that I didn't want to read off-topic posts. I just said I was tired of reading posts begging for rep. I'm not really sure why or how you consider a post that simply says "rep me rep me" funny, but then maybe I don't have a sense of humor.

And seriously, as I read posts throughout the day I find many that are rep-worthy. I never have enough rep points to give out to all the ones I think deserve it.
I actually run into the same problem. Sometimes I'm out of rep when I find a post I want to rep, but that is a totally different subject than rep-begging. I'm sure that if there wasn't so much rep-begging going on, Neil might be much more inclined to increase the amount. But given the fact that the way things currently are, it would probably just lead to more rep-begging, I think that the amount is just fine or maybe even too high.

I don't think that your reply was pompous in the least. Just taking this site too seriously. And if you want seriousness, just avoid the off-topic area.
If anyone has read my posts, there would certainly be aware that I'm anything but serious all the time. I guess I just find no entertainment value in a post that simply begs others to rep them. I actually rep posts that I find funny all of the time and they are some of my favorites. I'm more than willing to rep someone when they deserve it. I just don't think that a post begging for rep is worth it.

Again, you obviously have the resources and know-how to put your own forum together if that is what you want a forum to be about. The administrator of this site has requested that we stop begging for rep. I personally think that is a great idea. If your post is rep-worthy, it will be repped appropriately.

First, I don't recally anyone saying they didn't want to read anything but RSL stuff. You'll have to show me where anyone said that.

Second, most people, including me, simply hit the "new posts" link and read threads from there. I don't always pay attention to exactly what forum each particular thread happens to be in. Besides, you never know what interesting conversation, such as this one, might pop up wherever, so I tend to read everything no matter where it is.

Congratulations! Those rep points are more earned than the ones you got from simply begging for them.

And where have I said that the reason the rep limit should be increased is for rep-whoring?

Points gotten from begging are probably about 1/4 of my total rep points. But rep is a totally meaningless thing anyways. That is why I find this so laughable.

To be honest, I am bewildered that people take it so seriously. I think that is what sparked my original reaction to Neil's first post...the thought in my head that "this guy can't really take this rep crap so seriously, can he?". But I guess a lot of you live and die by it. To me it means nothing. And every rep-enabled forum I have been a part of has been one where rep is a joke at best (BigSoccer may be the exception, but even that depends on which parts of BS you frequent.

Aero, I have had a lot of respect for you previous to today. But your entry into this thread is odd. And you seem to be reading things into my comments that I have not said.

Can't we all just get along? I thought this forum was about RSL and the "beautiful game". I don't care if I ever get another point of rep again as long as this forum exists. Neil could just say, "Screw it!" and take the forum down if he wanted to. I look to this forum as a place to learn more about soccer and RSL. I am a soccer newbie. I am excited about having a Major League sport in Salt Lake City. I am excited that I can actually afford season tickets (I can't say that about the Jazz). I am excited that MLS players are not prima-donnas (okay, there are a few exceptions, but not on RSL). If someone wants some rep, just ask me and I will give it to you, if I have it to give. But, lets try to remember the main focus of this site. If I've offended anyone, I did not mean to. I'm just grateful that this forum exists. Big Soccer sucks, IMHO. Without this forum all I would have would be Big Soccer.

Actually the way you posted the original thread did kind of say this. If you had started it off by asking if the rep could be raised, I'm sure noone would have thought twice about it. But what you did was say was, and I am reading between lines here, hey moron, this is how you do it. That was probably not your intent, but I see how it could have been taken that way.

As far as feedback in teaching, I have two things to say. First, if someone walked into your lecture and first criticized you in front of your class rather harshly, including a few personal insults thrown in, I doubt you would hear even valuable feedback in the rest of the message. Second if you are teaching at a university level, then you are one of the few at that level that actually can.

Sadly, probably not.

It is becoming increasingly clear to me that I stumbled into a hornets nest here, somewhat unwittingly.

I'm going to back down. Neil is doing us all a great service with these forums. I shouldn't have asked if raising the rep limit was a possibility, and from now on I will use rep only in the prescribed fashion.
