Are we getting schizophrenic again?

I live in West Valley, pretty much everywhere else does not suck compared to West Valley. So, if you move to Utah, and you want gang violence in your front yard, move to West Valley. If you'd prefer not to deal with it, move to Park City or something.

I was explaining to a Brazilian what West Valley was like and I compared it to the most crime ridden, dirty, grafiti-marked barrio in Sao Paulo, Diadema. If any of you have been to Diadema, then you know West Valley is similar. If you haven't, I wouldn't recommend it.

I realize this thread is veering off target, but does UC get a bad rap because its so heavily LDS?

And yes, I would expect the missionaries AND all of you there waiting with bated breathe to help unload my personal belongings into my new mansion in XYZ county.
🙂

Jules, which job agency did your husband use?

Draper is better than Alpine because it is that much farther away from Provo.

It isn't because it is so heavily LDS, it is that it has so many of what I call Utah Mormons.

Boy, I hope this is all a joke.
OK, I'll ask it. What is a Utah Mormon?

Grooooaaaaaaaaaaannn... you had to bite! 😉

Someone like me--you know, fiercely republican, uberconservative, uptight, holier-than-thou, close-minded, really superior acting, naive about the "real world".

Oh wait... I'm not republcan. I'm conservative about moral issues but not without putting a lot of serious thought into things. I'm anxious personality-wise but that's the way some people are built. I am much less holier-than-thou than a lot of people who are very unmormon (that has nothing to do with religion when you think about it), and I'm open-minded about learning whatever I can from people very different from me. And I probably should have been expelled from BYU for my level of "naivete" at times.

So, you know... a Utah Mormon is someone like me. Or at least like what people would assume about me when they know I am a stay-at-home mom in the UC.

I am just a little confused.
Gordon Hinckley is a pretty big Mormon, from what I hear. And he went to Unv. of Utah and lived in Millcreek. He seems to be about uber-everything that is a Utah Mormon. 🙂

"Utah Mormon" does not refer to location, it refers to attitude. GBH is not a Utah Mormon in this sense. In fact, one need not be from Utah, or even have set foot in it, to be a Utah Mormon. And not all Mormons in Utah are Utah Mormons, not by a long shot.

If you are an American member of the LDS Church and don't know what a Utah Mormon is, people are calling you one behind your back. If your ancestors fled the U.S. because of polygamy and went to Mexico (which was what what is now called Utah was a part of when the LDS left Nauvoo) but now fear of non-traditional marriage is your main motivator when you walk in the voting booth. If you are in favor of the war and do not have a member of your family enlisted but do have several family members on missions for the LDS church. If "mission field" is in your vocabulary in any way that is not completely sarcastic and ironic. If you drive a minivan that is 6 or more years old and filled with 5 of your kids and has a W bumper sticker on the back, but you are either poorer or in more debt than you were 7 years ago. If you honestly believe that the government has sinister plans when they suggest putting flouride in the drinking water, you are a Utah County Mormon. If you are surprized to hear that less than one percent of the population of the US lives in Utah. If you didn't know that Utah has the lowest enlistment rate in the nation and the highest support for Bush in the last election and that stat doesn't bother you even a little. If you think God invented scapbooking as a missionary tool.

I once had someone say to me (in complete seriousness) "If God wanted us to eat mangos, he would have had them grow in Utah." Think about that statement for a second. Let it really sink in and consider it from many angles. That to me, sums up what a Utah Mormon is.

I don't know anyone here well enough to say whether they are a Utah Mormon or not, but I suspect they are very rare on this forum.
