Another question. Did Anakin REALLY defear Count Dooku, or was that part of Palpatine's big picture to get Anakin to switch? Did Count Dooku let Anakin win????

Ok I have read most of the book. It makes it obvious in the book that Palpatine could have beaten Windu, but wanted to do some more psyche damage to Anakin. So that answers that.
As for Dooku and Anakin, according to the book, Palpatine and Dooku had a plan to have Anakin and Kenobi defeat Dooku, capture him and then end the war. At least thats what Dooku thought. In reality, Palpatine was setting Dooku up to be killed by his new apprentice, Anakin. If you look carefully, you can see Dooku is very surprised when Palpatine says "now kill him". 🙂 Nice guy.

Did Anakin beat Dooku on his own merits, though, or was he getting some special help from his soon-to-be master?

According to the book, Dooku underestimated Anakin's abilities. He thought Anakin was going to do a cerain technique of fighting and Anakin did something entirely different. There is nothing that suggests that Palpatine was helping him. It also goes deeper into how Anakin feels guilty for killing Dooku.

So, the pattern is, bring in a new apprentice to kill off the old one.
Was that the plan in Return of the Jedi as well? I guess if Luke had killed Vader then perhaps his journey to the Dark Side would have been complete as well. Either that or he would have used that chirpy little Ewok fellow, what's his name again? Oh yeah, Wicket.

Yes, that is the Sith pattern. In fact, that is why there is only supposed to be 2 Sith at any one time. Any more than that and there is whole sale slaughter.
Although I agree that Dooku did under-estimate Anakin's abilities, the book also shows that Sidious, mostly thru the Force, was encouraging Anakin to use his aggression to beat Dooku. Which he did.

Just saw the movie a few hours ago this morning (our company rented a theatre for a 6 AM showing)
A few random thoughts (SPOILER ALERT, but this thread is marked with [R] of course so don't whine if I give anything away.) I too noted the continuity problem that Leia remembered her mother in Episode VI. It makes sense that Padme died that way (of a broken heart) though and if she hadn’t died in this movie, the conditions of her death would have been left hanging. Natalie Portman is turning into a hottie. (Especially when she lets her hair down.) :D Jar-Jar (thankfully) didn’t speak once. :p I’d been excited about some of the story taking place on the Wookie planet, but then was let down when not that much happened there. 🙁 Killing all the little Jedi children was a bit disturbing, but when you think about it, is obviously something that had to happen. 😲 Special effects are miles ahead of the Episodes IV through IV. It’s amazing how many elements are active at one time. I too found it the second best of the lot (after Empire Strikes Back). Interesting how the 2 saddest and darkest movies were the best ones. Going to have to go out and get the book (and the soundtrack) now of course.
