MLS Week 5 Attendance

The tally this week:

Fire-Revs: 54,427
KC-DCU: 12,008
Revs-sc: 7,813
Crew-Fire: 11,111
CRapids-Metro: 10,259
RSL-Quakes: 16,254
LA-FCD: 20,021

Thanks to the Mexico-Poland match, the Fire get to count over 50K for their game on Wednesday. Bogus, but we'll take it to get the average higher.

RSL average: 20,771.

Attendance was better than I was expecting with the crappy weather we have been having. Do you think we can expect this crowd all season?

The CRapids/Metros match looked and sounded better attended than Revs/Chivas and DC/KC. Plus CRapids lost. Hehehehe.

Just found the official attendance in Denver (not listed on MLSNet for some reason):

10,259

Not bad for the CRapids.

Considering it was snowing, 10,259 is a respectable number. All the more people to witness their defeat. 😉

I'm glad to see we got almost 17,000 to the game. Looking at the forum earlier this week, I was a bit worried that the numbers were going to go way down from the opener.

Not really bogus, considering we'll be able to count 45,000+ for the USMNT v Costa Rica.

😠 With the Revs playing as well as they have been and with all the wins they are getting this early in the season it is a huge dissappointment that the fans are not showing up for the games. Hopefully that trend will turn around soon. I've also noticed that most of the markets seem to be quite lower than the average of 15,000 we have seen in past years. 😲

Don't get me wrong--we'll count it. But understand that those who like to bash soccer are quick to point out what they call inflated attendance numbers from games like that.

I am curious to see how many are actually in the stands for the RSL game on June 4th. My guess is that it will be a big crowd for both games. In Chicago, it looked like hardly anyone showed up for the undercard. Kind of embarassing.

As of the games yesterday, MLS attendance is averaging 15,181 per game. That's on target.

However, four teams are still averaging under 10,000 a game (FCD, Revs, Quakes, and CRapids) and only three are averaging over 20,000 (Chicago, RSL, and LA). Chicago's 54K last Wednesday helped. Without that, the MLS average would have been 13,780.

MLS does not pay much public attention to attendance because they don't want fans and media to get wrapped up in what can be a weekly sine wave. I don't blame them. I'm only interested because it matters quite a bit in Salt Lake that we have strong attendance. That's the best way to put pressure on politicians with the stadium issue, although something tells me Uncle Dave has that whole thing under control. 😉

But you're right--the Revs numbers are a concern. They've been a strong market for MLS from 1996 on, so an attendance of 7,813 is a bit of a shock. I guess cheetos didn't exactly pull them in on the road.

About an hour before kickoff the FO was expecting 12-13k.

16k+ is great considering every weatherman in town was selling umbrellas, goloshes, and chains to get up the canyons.
