Those arriving late missed some spectacular displays from the Milan ultras. Italian fans are famous for their visual displays and the Milan fans did not disappoint. As the team ran out hundreds of toilet rolls were hurled into the air, creating the spectacular sight of white streamers cascading from the middle tier behind the goal. Then just as the game was about to kick-off a banner reading, ‘I’ve got a devil in me,’ was unfurled and then cards held up to show a set of demonic eyes. Despite the impressive sight, United fans still mocked, though you sensed through envy rather than genuine dislike. United supporters are at the cutting edge of fan culture in this country having some of the most successful and best selling fanzines, an active supporters’ association and incredibly professional group of Shareholders. When it comes to visual displays and creating atmosphere however, we simply can’t compare to the Italians. Once the new Old Trafford is completed and the bowl effect in place more effort should be made to create the type of display that the Milan supporters pulled off to such great effect. It would enhance the atmosphere, give the players a lift and reawaken Old Trafford as a vibrant, raucous venue. Throughout the game the Milan supporters kept up the volume and with Reds doing their best to lift their players the atmosphere was at times hair raising.
