Cheerleaders

The Metros apparently will have a cheerleading squad this year, the metrogirlzz (-zz??? did Utah lose a marketing exec to NY???) and it made me think... how do RSL fans feel about cheerleaders.

I vote NO. I go to a soccer match to watch the sport. If I want soft-core porn there is always E!.

I don't really care much either way. I see good and bad in it. I think it might help with some of the more casual fans, but it certainly distracts from the actual match for the more hardcore fan. I guess I won't really complain no matter what happens.

Of course, I reserve the right to change my opinion in the future. 😉

Can't say this a big concern of mine.

I know they have cheerleaders for some teams down in Mexico, and nobody seems to complain.

If I was a purist, I would be totally against it. But I've always felt that soccer in the USA shouldn't be a carbon copy of what's done elsewhere nor a compilation of bits and pieces from overseas either. Soccer culture should reflect the country where it's found. If that means we have cheerleaders since, well, Americans expect cheerleaders, then that's OK by me.

If the cheerleaders would start up chants and songs, we could be on to something. 😉

It's not like we'd be doing something obnoxious like holding MLS shootouts, having the clock run down instead of up, and stopping the game for TV timeouts.

That would be bad.

I am not a purist nor did I get rejected in high school but I do believe that cheerleaders are useless in a professional sport... high school is one thing but pro sports have cheerleaders for no other reason than to attract young testosterone charged men...

Well I for one think that we can lead our own cheers and frankly I think that having the cheerleaders try to start the chants and songs would just make it phoney... the FANS chant and sing so what would the cheerleaders be left to do but stand around and pick there noses...

If you are only going to a match to see cheerleaders then go see football or basketball or better yet just rent a movie and stay home cos you will not be an active participant in the fan section anyway... and you more than likely would not cheer or chant or sing even if the cheerleaders were to attempt to start everyone off.

Baseball does not have cheerleaders and it has survived just fine!
Cheerleaders cheapen the sport.

Obviously you didn't attend California/Anaheim/LA/Whatever Angels games when Disney took over. Cheerleaders. Then they finally won the world series. Coincidence, I'm sure.

Look, cheerleaders are useless in pro sports for leading cheers. No argument there. I just don't get the vehement opposition to having them. I don't really care, but I find the negativity a little puzzling.

We sure don't NEED cheerleaders. Frankly, the only MLS team I've seen consistently field a cheerleading squad is KC. I know for sure that DC doesn't and LA doesn't. Can't speak for the others.

There certainly isn't a demand for them. Since soccer is a game of continuous action, traditional cheerleading just doesn't make much sense. No breaks for routines, etc.

OBTW, has anyone from RSL actually proposed cheerleaders? I doubt it. It would be well down the list of priorities, I would think.
