From the Printed Version:
The only team currently in negotiations with an advertiser is the LA Galaxy. It is quoted as a "multimillion deal". The article cites Red Bull and Vergara as the owners who pushed this idea. The article also noted that the MLS Board of Governors already approved front jersey advertising for the Red Bulls at the beginning of the season.

Well... it is like the rest of the world... so MLS is catching up... I just hope they don't go overboard like the Mexican leagues (the Jerseys in Mexican leagues look more like a NASCAR)
BTW I wonder if they are going to limit the pharmacuetical companies as well... I for one would rather see an ad for Jack Daniels or wasteyourmoneyatmycasino dot com than an ad for cialis or viagra or that purple pill... I wonder who the Red Bulls will get as a sponsor? 🙄 I think RSL will have a bidding war between Xango and KFC Last edited by Deuce : 09-28-2006 at 08:39 AM.

So when you go into a KFC you ask for some Utah Fried Chicken? In fact how in the world has that company survived this long without changing its name for each state it's in? I bet a lot of people get confused when they drive past a KFC because they thought they were in SLC not Lexington. You should write the CEO. __________________ "We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true." - Robert Wilensky Last edited by soccerman : 09-28-2006 at 09:40 AM.

Technically it is not "Kentucky Fried Chicken" anymore... The parent company officially changed the name from "Kentucky Fried Chicken" to simply "KFC" in order to distance the fast food chain from the negative conotations associated with the word "fried"... I am not making this up! We all know what KFC means but somehow leaving out the word fried makes it different... Kinda like calling a war a "police action" somehow makes it not a war... but anyway.... you get the idea...

And, one of the strangest things ever is the first franchise location for KFC was in... drum roll please... South Salt Lake. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky_Fried_Chicken Story goes, Utah guy, Pete Harmon, ate at the hotel where the KFC recipe was used. The operator of the restaurant had a standing offer for folks to run franchises which nobody had yet taken up. Harmon signed a contract, and put up the first Kentucky Fried Chicken location.

I wouldn't say they're keeping them afloat as in the league would go belly up without them. They are the type of companies to expect to be marketing with a sports team. They're aimed at consumers and they constantly advertise to keep their product on people's minds. You don't tend to see other large companies like GE, Caterpillar, Cargill, Fidelity Investments, or Lockheed Martin advertising this way. It tends to to be companies that tend to depend on consumers for their business. __________________

Teams used to have lower back jersey sponsors. Maybe some still do. I remember Snickers, Honda (Chicago?), Bud, USSoccer, etc.
As you know, USL teams have had jersey sponsors for some time now.

My sister once started wildly claiming that the government had made them change thier name because they were using some sort of genetically engineered monster instead of chickens.. she swore up and down she had seen these things - claimed they were chickens without beaks. Anyway I looked into it a bit just to calm her down. Nope, regular old chickens. Deuce it may be that they wanted to distance themselves from the word "fried" - in fact that sounds like a better explanation than the CEO gave, which was that they wanted to appeal to the hip young acronymically aware demographic (HYAAD). __________________
