New MLS labor contract

Logan Pause may be able to move out of his parents' home

New labor agreement between MLS and players ups minimum salary and takes care of health benefits. Comments?

A minimum salary of $24K? That's worse than teacher's salaries! (Barely!) And that is for people who have to live near a major city for their team, right? That's pretty bad, really... I hope there aren't many at the "minimum wage."

My impression is that the majority actually play for this minimum salary. No?

Last winter/spring Soccer America got a hold of the salaries and released. A search might turn it up.

As I remember there were a couple on each team that probably worked as substitute teachers to afford gas. I would say league average was more like 60K

Try this link for player salaries circa Jan 2004

I count 35 players whose guaranteed salaries were under $30k. Some teams have only one or two and other teams have five or six. Also one Bryan Foss (?) was making 15k (under the minimum salary, anyone know what the deal is?)

On the other hand there were 46 by my count making over $100k guaranteed. 8 of these were over $300k.

So I guess you can play for peanuts (Mr. Foss, anyone?) or you can make some serious coin (uh Darryl Powell $239,999.92 what in the?!?! (good thing those 92 cents are there, I feared for the well-being of the little Powells)) playing in MLS.

These salaries are out of date, but they give a pretty good idea of how MLS salaries go, I'd think.

👍

Thanks. That's very informative. I always wondered what they got paid.

I point out that the new CBA allows for a large increase in min salaries for MLS players. This is very good. Now the MLSPU has to vote yes on it...
We'll see.
