Ummmmmmmm... the letter that said they are committed to the fans and the community...then the radio show that said if they dont get something by 12 August they are out of here. Totally two faced.

I too am frustrated by the lack of PR on this, however I kinda think Stucki may be right in that they believed, based on the "wink-wink, nod-nod's" from state and county leaders, that all would be well. They probably felt like they didn't need to spend a lot of money on PR because this deal was in the bag, and the public didn't really need to buy into it because it was going to be handled by the leaders. It's only been a month or so since the first deal was shot down, IIRC. And they probably spent their time and money since then trying to figure out an alternative funding mechanism, and shoring up county council votes rather than trying to sell the public on this. Now the public is their only option, and they're working it pretty hard.
Aerick, they already paid the PR group. I don't know if PR firms have a la cart menu's. the money was spent, it was just a sucky sucky job. (i'm really at a loss of words to describe the suckiness of the situation, so I'll stick with suck).

I get the impression that this Aug.12 deadline from Checketts is pretty much Checketts version of the nega-feeling most of us have hear on the forum and in RSL-fandom generally. I think he is stressed out and pissed. Is it his fault? Probably. But he is still entitled to mope.

I don't understand why he is dropping deadlines and at the same time saying its not over til the fat lady sings.

I think that this was a big mistake by the team. My perception is that lot of people out there opposed to stadium funding have an attitude that "if their hard earned money is given to RSL to build a stadium, there is no way in hell they will ever attend a game." Even if funding had gone through or does eventually somehow go through, a lot of people out there will disagree with the decision. Sure the die-hard soccer fans will be there in the seats, but that casual person out there who occasionally takes the kids to a baseball game, soccer match, or a hoops game, instead of a movie is someone that it is nice to have in the stands too. (even if they only cheer for plastic fruit thrown out at half time.)

These same people have no idea that their public funds are going to Covey field. awesome.

He is dropping deadlines because the team has a lease that expires at the end of 2007 that cannot be renewed. If he doesn't break ground by August 12, the stadium will not be done by midseason 2008. This deadline is really not that hard to understand.

He's saying it's not over yet because, well, it isn't. There are still several proposals on the table and plenty of time to get one approved.

Would anybody mind if I called out a few of the "fans"? I just waded through 6 pages of piss and vinegar from several posters about how there's nothing that can be done, boycott RSL, etc. If there's nothing we can do and you're done with RSL, then please spare those of us who are still fans from having to read your crap. I understand you're frustrated, and you have a right to be. But turning on those people who still want to help until the bitter end is bull****. If you're no longer a fan, fine, I can deal with that. But do me a favor and stay the hell out of my way. It's funny that some people are questioning Dave's committment to Utah when you're showing the same lack of committment you accuse him of.

.

It's hard for me.

What goes on in Rice Eccles besides RSL and Ute Pointyball? There used to be a Motocross race there, but I think it moved.

You're telling me that Chris Agnello and Stacy McNicoll are more astute business people than Dave Checketts and they were in a stronger negotiating position than Dave Checketts?

Now, Rice Eccles is run by people who get paid the same whether or not RSL plays there. But if people who ran a team out of an apartment could work out a deal; I suspect that Checketts could if he put his mind to it.

If Dave didn't already have half the moving van packed, he'd be saying;
Quote:
"I'm working with the U of U for a better deal on Rice Eccles while I fire my PR staff, my coach and half my players and I bring in some competent ones. I'm going to scout around for some new sites and maybe that hippie Rocky Anderson did stop dropping acid for long enough to come up with a workable plan at the Fairpark. I don't like Rice Eccles, but we are stuck with it while I correct some mistakes that I made."

But you don't hear that. You hear about how everyone is picking on him and nothing is his fault.

Also, if this stadium deal is such a can't-miss proposition; why can't Checketts just find more investors for the infrastructure?

Love RSL, hate blackmail; will learn to like the Ogden Outlaws.

FWIW IBIK: I'm glad there's message boards where I can vent my frustration. I go home a happy person that way and can enjoy my family that much more.

The law has to do with how much money is being made at the U's facility. The Blitzz fell far short of the revenue required to make this an issue. RSL's revenue far exceeds it. This is not about negotiating - it's about the law, and no amount of negotiating would matter. You're going to have to trust me on this, RSL and the Blitzz are in two completely different boats.
