Oh, that an entertaining team like Argentina had gone to the final...

SCREW ITALY. I've hated them ever since we were drawn into their group and I will hate them forever more. Nice cup. Whatever.

At the risk of being branded a soccer heretic, I'll tell you why Z pulled his stunt. He knew that he was leaving international soccer and was in the middle of one of the most boring WC finals in history. He knew that his team only score because of an obvious flop and that his opponents weren't interested in scoring a second goal which was obvious by the fact that they had 11 guys stacked in the goal box looking at their wrist watches waiting for a PK shootout. He knew that the game needed some spice in it, so he gave it what it needed: some action.

My other theory is that if you roll the replay back a few more seconds you'll see Materazzi give Zidane a giant titty twister. If anyone has the game on Tivo, check it out and see what you think.

Although I am happy Italy beat France, I thought I would post this from the NAS board:

came across the following blog. the blogger compiled a number of
videos of Materazzi (sp?). seems he's not quite an angel on the field

Theories have abounded as to what Materazzi might have said to provoke such a response and the former Everton defender conceded he did make an offensive remark. "I held his shirt for a few seconds only, then he turned to me and talked to me, jeering," said Materazzi. "He looked at me with a huge arrogance and said, 'If you really want my shirt I'll give it to you afterwards'. I replied with an insult, that's true."

Materazzi has not elaborated on what he did say, but one report suggested he responded with: "I'd rather take the shirt off your wife." He has, however, denied that he insulted Zidane's mother or called the son of Algerian immigrants a terrorist. A lip reader employed by the BBC claimed Materazzi said: "I wish an ugly death to you and all your family," and then told Zidane to "go **** yourself".

Zidane himself is yet to speak on the incident, but his agent yesterday claimed the reaction was due to a "very serious" comment.

Materazzi admitted that he tweaked the France captain's nipple as they clashed in extra time. After which, it is alleged Zidane responded: "If you want my shirt so much, you can f****** have it after the game."

The Italian said that he then replied: "I'd rather have the shirt off your woman," a supposed reference to the Frenchman's wife Veronique.

Breaking news shows that Zidane was actually trying to save Materazzi's life.
