I don't think that we'd ever see an MLS Cup (it has to be on a Sunday) and I think that the NCAA soccer championships play on Sundays.

Taxpayer spending on sports facilities; even those that are part of a larger commercial development; do not automatically create jobs.
No, the stadium alone wouldn't, but the whole development would. The stadium in and of itself would do very little in terms of job creation. The commercial real estate development would be a VERY different story, however.

Any Arsenal fans here?

West Valley City spends their tax money on some stupid things (like subsidies for newspapers) but I don't think they spent anything on this.

When I drove by today, there were some guys hard at work putting in some infrastructure. They did not appear to be WVC employees. But maybe WVC is paying them. I'd be interested to find out.

But, at least at first glance; some private investors appear to be paying for their own infrastructure.

Just curious. Does anyone know the political party affiliations of the members of the council? I'm fairly certain that Jenny is a democrat like her father and that county mayor Caroon is also democrat. Wondering if the voting yesterday possibly followed party lines somewhat.

Last year I felt that the conservative state legislature blocking Salt Lake from using RDA funds was largely due to Rocky's liberalism. Wondering if a conservative Sandy City was blocked in a simlar fashion in this case.

(Don't you just love politics!)

Sure, a small company here and there will pay for their own infrastructure, but you'd never see a Micron or Microsoft pay for it. There is too much competition for those companies and cities compete by offering incentives. Real Salt Lake, although not Microsoft, seems to be a fairly hot commodity if you listen to some...

Yeah, and I bet they would charge the local high school to use their buildings, something I don't think Real was planning on doing. The whole idea of the public-private partnership is that the public helps build the infrastructure and later has certain benefits in regards to the stadium: you could hold high school sports, graduations, and other events there, and if the public paid for the infrastrucutre, they have a right to free events at the stadium.

Party lines had nothing to do with it.

Democrats: Hatch for, Bradley against, Horiuchi for, Wilson against
Republicans: Ashton for, Jensen for, Wilde against, Crockett against, Hendrickson against

How I see the party lines...

Smart: Aston: for, Jensen: for, Hatch: for, Horiuchi: for
Stupid *******: Bradly: nay, Wilson: nay, Wilde: nay, Crockett: nay, Hendrickson: nay.

I agree with Burninator, when looking at all the facts of this project, the vote is baffling.

Also, I believe that the private funding Dave lined up for the stadium may have tied into the other development, therefore it's likely that without the extra 400 million in development that the 100 million for the stadium wouldn't have materialized.

Dave Checketts on the Doug Wright show today:

There have been (I never would have predicted this) but there have been some people working against it and behind the scenes. And the number one guy working against the soccer stadium has been Larry Miller.

http://real.ksl.com/audio/2006_07_12_doug2.mp3 about 2/3 the way through.

Larry Miller = Microsoft
Dave Checketts = Netscape

Nothing like intimidating/maneuvering/bribing away the competition. Anti-trust lawsuit anyone?
