Cougar Stadium?

Checketts and Howe made the comment that RSL might use Cougar Stadium for intern'l friendlies and exhibition games in the future (including a Aug 12 game, who? no one knows).

This has caused quite the uproar on BS, especially centering in on the idea that RSL is heading south, south of downtown SLC that is.

Anyone here have any thoughts on this?

Most major teams wouldn't set foot on artificial turf. Which is more profitable, putting 45k in RES and paying for grass or putting 65k in LaVell Edwards Stadium and paying rent on the stadium? (I think capacity is actually less - about 62k , since they put in more Cougar Club seats in the former student section)
I'd guess the Provo option is more expensive, but with more seats could also be more profitable.

I don't like it. The traffic getting in and out of the stadium that will not be named is PAINFUL. And you basically have to drive b/c the public transportation options down there from the SLC are pitiful. I really don't like spending time in Utah County. It just frightens me. I will however go there to see a big name European team.

I do understand why RSL would do it though. It has to be cheaper than laying down grass @ RES again. Last year they hoped that the grass could go toward a practice field and maybe that helped justify the costs. Justifying that cost again would be hard and I am sure that the use of the stadium that will not be named is cheaper than the installation and maintenance of the grass @ RES. Also, the surface will be better than the patchwork grass @ RES, the stadium is bigger, etc.

Wouldn't RSL have to pay rent on either stadium?

NOT IN HEAVEN'S OWN STADIUM, NO!!!!! NOT WHERE I CAN'T GET CAFFEINE, LET ALONE A MEASLY LITTLE BEER! NO!!!!!!!!!!! NOT WHERE I WILL BE SURROUNDED BY MORMON AFTER MORMON AFTER MORMON AND THEY MIGHT LOOK AT ME AND KNOW ALL MY SECRETS AND JUDGE ME!!!!!

NEAUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! 😉

Ok, now that I got that out of my system, I think the potential ticket draw (extra 20k seats at $30+ per seat = $600,000+) is significant, but traffic will be a problem. It always is. Renting either stadium may come out to a wash financially. Other than that, it would sure be fun!!!

It's battier than Anna Nicole to stage an international match at that stadium if you ask me, but the caffeine and beer have addled my brain so...

😠

i don't think it's an issue here. those who are whining and complaining about the fact that the game could be played in *gasp!* a stadium outiside of salt lake city!!!!!! the powers that be are going to go to the stadium that will provide the best 1) turnout and 2)exposure for the game. number 2 falls right into number one, as more people going will surely bring more exposure, right?

from what i've noticed, there are *way* too many people who claim to be fans whining when the game isn't at the perfect time, the perfect place, or the perfect price for THEM. that's not what being a fan is about. there's a reason real fans of a team get pissy when things start looking good and then suddenly there are a lot more fans. (having been the announcer for a college hockey team for several years and have seen the trend there as well.)

soccer is soccer, and it's THE beautiful game. fans need to become true fans and just enjoy the fact that there's quality soccer here in "ye olde beehive state" for us to go see.

granted, i think some teams could learn something from spending a little time with a hockey team to learn how to give/take a hit here or there...

😉

and having had to drive/work around the stadium (parking enforcement) after a game lets out, let me just advise those of you planning on coming, either take your sweet time getting out, or bring a good CD. there's always a silver lining to relaxing on a summer evening with the windows rolled down...

Why would this cause "an uproar"? Seriously.

Distance? Lame argument. If it's too far for you to go, don't go. Someone else will.

Traffic? Oh no. If this stops you from going, don't go. Someone else will.

Location? I'm too cool for Utah County. Oh well, don't go. Someone else will.

I'm not understanding what the problem is. Especially when the realistic choices are either: 1) Lavell Edwards Stadium, or 2) Not in Utah.
