Middlesbrough vs. Basle (UEFA Cup) [R]

If you didn't see the Middlesbrough - Basle tie yesterday at The Riverside, you missed one of the greatest games in UEFA Cup history.

Middlesbrough were down 2-0 from the first leg. Basle scored an away goal in the 23rd minute, so now not only was Middlesbrough down 3-0, but to win the match, they needed 4 goals.

And incredibly they got them -- the last one in stoppage time -- to go through to the semifinals. It was a nail-biter, but Massimo Maccarone capped off an incredible comeback in the last minute of regulation time.

Mark Viduka (33)
Mark Viduka (57)
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (79)
Massimo Maccarone (90)

Hasselbaink's goal was a thing of beauty.

It was pure brilliance. The very idea that Boro have still not re-signed Jimmy is a travisty.

Seems like him and McClaren have been butting heads, haven't they? I'm happy to see a club like Boro progressing. My only frustration is that McClaren for England rumors have been popping up again.

I know, I know, it scares me frankly, he has a reputation for crushing players ego to benefit his own, scary prospect for an England manager.

That and I think he hasn't done much with Boro. Sure, they finally won the Carling Cup (or whatever it's called these days) for some silverware. But he's had plenty of money to spend on players along the way. They're having a nice run in EUFA right now. But let's face it, it's a knock-out tournie and they've been a lil' lucky. I don't think he's done enough with Boro to really show he deserves the job. I think that Cursh and Big Sam have done better. And at that there are better options out there for the job, espeically if they're not hung up on the new gaffer being English.
