We are a soccer nation.

Here's what I sent.

Doug,

I didn't get your column regarding soccer.* Certainly you are aware that MLS has been around for 10 years.* Are you also aware that SLC was selected ahead of Philly, Houston, & Seattle for an expansion team.* You come off sounding like someone who is rather uneducated about the situation.

I'm sure Mr. Jorgenson will let you know that his team was the Utah Freeze not the Salt Lake Freeze.* He could also share with you that indoor and outdoor are completely different games.* Freeze games would be great material for Spike TV.* Comparing indoor and real soccer is like comparing the NFL with the Arena League.

Do you know what type of league the Freeze were in?* I think it was simply the weirdest league ever.* The World Indoor Soccer League.* With travel to Europe and South America (where indoor is just a training tool) on dinky budgets it's a shock that any investor opened a wallet.

Check the wire, Doug.* The MISL isn't dead.* The women's league was called the WUSA.* Where did all these "facts" come from?* CBS?

Soccer can work in North America.* Like any business it has to be done the right way.* MLS and its investors, notably Dave Checketts, are getting it done.* It will be a success.* Real Salt Lake will mold into a world class club.

Then there is omission of anything about the Blitzz!* They were a success on and off the field.* By filling your column with distorted anecdotes and one sidedness, coupled with the pretending the Blitzz didn't exist, leads anyone with any background to see your article as a joke.

If I understand you main message it's that public money shouldn't be spent on the stadium.* Is this the best you could do to make that point?

paying for soccer in Utah,

Glenn Webb

ps.
Hey didn't you also say in the article that Delta Center and the Winter Games didn't impact economic development?* That is a head scratcher!

Hey guys all those posts were great. I too sent an email yesterday, I'll try to see if I have a copy of it and repost it here. But basically I said the same thing. Shame on the writer.

And what Loyal1 said... figures. 🙄

I'm impressed by the quality of many of these letters. I suggest that their respective authors submit these to the paper's editor as "letters to the editor". Chances are Robinson is just closed-minded and biased on the idea of RSL, a SSS in SLC and soccer in general. I'm sure he's having a good laugh right now at all the email he's getting. Let the editor know of your concern over his article including all the misrepresentations and factual errors Robinson presented . Perhaps the editor will even publish one in the paper.

I was just going to say the same thing, Jason. It's great that so many people are voicing their opinion, but it would be kind of a shame if no one besides Doug knows that it's happening. Wonder if we could send this thread to some of the other columnists as well or something.

Yeah, lets get these letters out there so people know that we're behind the team.

I would do the same but I'm betting the FBI already has a lengthy file on me because of my friendships in the Middle East. (*gasp* I talk to Muslims! And I like them! And they like me! Mutual respect between Christians and Muslims must be suspicious to SOMEBODY at the FBI.)

I mentioned this on BS, but with some good RSL coverage in both local papers today, including a pretty unbiased article from Brad Rock, I think it would be a good idea to let them (the editor as well as the journalist) know that it's appreciated. Just a thought.

Although the editorial from the guy that thought that it would be best if the team just stayed in RES was laughable.

Mr. Rock,

I would like to thank you for your article titled 'Build a stadium, gain MLS following'. I am a fan of MLS and a RSL season ticket holder. There have been a couple of recent articles regarding MLS, RSL and the quest for a SSS in Salt Lake that have been obviously biased against soccer in the US and seriously lacking both factual and objective views. I found your article both objective and informative. I really appreciate this kind of open-minded reporting and look forward to reading more of your work in the future.

Bravo!

Sincerely,
