I don't venture to Utah County, and I live there!!! 😲 Look, for all you people that just love RES and have this huge problem with having to go "all the way" down to Sandy, at least you have Iggy's for the away games. There's no way that I'm driving 45 minutes both ways just to see an away game. 45 minutes both ways is borderline for a home game, so I hear you. I'm also with Deuce on this one: we have an MLS team, and I will support them as much as I can no matter where they are, be it SLC, Sandy, or LOGAN or something silly like that. I would own season tickets, but I haven't figured out a way to rig my finances in their favor yet. So, each of us has to decide how/when/why/where we will support our team. I'm just glad I'm not like sl7vk's (a Big Soccer poster) friends who, because they can walk to the games at RES, aren't even considering getting a ride down to Sandy in 2008.

If we want the stadium in Salt Lake (and I think we all do, as long as it makes good sense), then let's push for it. Let Salt Lake City know that you want the stadium. Tell your legislators, tell your mayor, tell anyone that will listen to you, and then tell them to BID COMPETITIVELY against Sandy and take the stadium back. That was the problem all along. Salt Lake City never really wanted to compete, and Checketts & Co. found a great deal in Sandy, so they took it. Tough. Oh, and I like the comparisons between the different cities. Sandy is a nice suburb (not too far away from downtown), and most (if not all) Soccer-Specific Stadia are going into the suburbs right now.

It would be great to have a stadium downtown, but only if it helps the team gain solvency. If the best SLC had to offer was the Fairgrounds, I say, "Well done, RSL, for taking the Sandy offer."

Have I said all of this before??? 😉

Me too. That is one thing that I'm very disappointed about with the new stadium. I think RSL is being very short-sighted.

The stadium is being designed with future expansion in mind, so that as demand grows, so does the number of seats.

At the Loyalists meeting on Saturday night Trey said that LaVell Edwards is one of the possible solutions... another is to sod RES again...
He also said that Dave Checketts is aggressively persuing more USMNT matches.

I am sure that we will get more USA Soccer and there will be plenty of seats for everyone.

That is good news.

I know, I'm biased, but I'd rather drink turpentine and piss on a brush fire than to watch any game in Provo.

But I'm not certain that a 20000 seat stadium is necessarily problematic for a USMNT game. I haven't seen the stadium plans, but if they plan it right it seems totally plausible for them to expand the stadium by 5000 seats for less money than re-sodding RES. Crew stadium 22,555, the HDC 27,000, and Pizza Hut Park 21,193 all seem to have no problem acquiring USMNT games. I don't see why a roughly 20K Real Stadium should have trouble attracting those games. That is provided that they invest the money to install and maintain a first class pitch.

The whole city vs suburb part of this argument is, to be blunt, stupid and pretentious. I suppose one could argue saying that in itself is pretentious. But come on people. This is something that's been going on since before WWII. And yet so often there's this whole "the suburbs suck / the city is great" thing going on. Funny how more folks live in the suburbs now. Some sort of evil brain washing or something, apparently. 😆

At the end of the day, they're all cities. Some cities are older than others. Some are larger than others. They have slightly different histories and different attractions. But they're just cities. Would I rather have this stadium downtown? Without a doubt I'd rather see it downtown. But how many people live downtown? Remember, the same reasons that you don't live downtown are more or less why Real Salt Lake is looking to locate in Sandy.

You can always do what I did, and move closer to the stadium. I'm less than a mile away. Problem solved. 🙂

Here is a lovely (tic) editorial about the county council meeting on Tuesday.

I wonder if this guy writes their unbiased articles as well?

The guy who wrote this editorial can't even own up to it by putting his name on it.

Instead he hides behind the name of: The Salt Lake Tribune

They actually called the new stadium a "rat hole". The rebuttal I want to write back into them would not be printable. Between their blatant bias against RSL and some of the hacks such as Monson and Kinnahan they have reporting their sports, the paper has less credibility with each passing day.

😠
