Jamie Watson at Cook Elementary School

Yesterday, September 29th, Jamie Watson made a visit to Cook Elementary School in Syracuse, UT.

My wife works with the PTA at the school and we have 3 children who attend the school. Jamie came and spoke to the kids in conjunction with Purple Ribbon Week, which focuses on stamping out violence. The assembly with Jamie Watson was the highlight of the week.

He spent about 45 minutes with the 3-6 grades in an assembly where he spoke to the kids about treating others with kindness. He used personal experiences to convey his message. Many of you probably know he has a brother who has cerebral palsy. When he was growing up it would hurt him to see other people tease his brother. He encouraged the kids to treat EVERYONE with kindness no matter what. After he talked he did some tricks with a soccer ball. At one point he did a bicycle kick into the audience and the kids went nuts! One lucky kid brought the ball back to the stage and Jamie headed the ball back and forth with him. Since my wife was in charge of the whole day, she called my son up out of the audience and he headed the ball back and forth with Jamie. Jamie also made my wife get up there and head the ball back and forth as well. Jamie Watson and Jamie Barton (Public Relation staff from the RSL offices), were given Cook Cougar hoodies, water bottles, and gift certificates donated by some generous restaurants (Mimi's Cafe and Happy Sumo Sushi).

When the assembly was over he visited the kindergarten classes and read a book with them. My daughter was in one of the classes and she got to sit on his lap and he gave her a hug. She was just all smiles.

The 1st and 2nd grades met Jamie outside and Jamie did some tricks with them on the grass. He had a competition between a student and teacher to see who could head the ball the most.

The time he spent was great. The kids chanted his name from their classrooms as he was leaving the school. It was awesome. All we can say is, thanks Jamie, you rock! :signrocko

I'll post a link when I get the pictures up.

What a sweet guy! I try to explain to non soccer fans why I love non-winning RSL, and this is a prime example. I have never known a sports team that puts so much effort into our community. You really grow to support and root for these guys because you become attatched to them on a personal level. 👏

Agree with you all. From the day my wife and I first met him at the pep rally in the spring before the first home game, we have been impressed with him as a genuinely nice guy. Big fans in our home as well.

Here is the link to some photos from the event.

Well, the teacher won for the first grade competition, 3 headers to 2. And, my wife won the 2nd grade competition, 4 headers to 2. No pictures of my wife, unfortunately, because she was the one taking all the pictures.

During the assembly, Jamie headed the ball 22 times in a row by himself as the kids counted (screamed) for him.

My son told me that usually during recess all the boys play 'pointy ball'. However, after the assembly he said that almost all the kids were playing soccer. NO 'POINTY BALL'! ⚽

I wish I could have attended the assembly. That was my plan ever since the date was finalized. I took the day off work and was real excited to go. However, I unexpectadly spent the day in the hospital having a test done on my heart. They thought I had a heart attack, but it ended up being something much less serious...thank goodness. Talk about bad luck...i'm only 36 and have never had any health problems in my life. To have this happen was very weird. I kept wanting someone to wake me up from my bad dream.
