Thanks for thinking of me Jennyof08, but I am in central Florida and in the "safe" zone.

Unfortunately this mega storm will descend on Gulf-area of Texas like a monster.

In fact, it might still be a hurricane when it gets to Dallas (RSL_Fan I think lives there).
Geez, at this rate, it might still be a hurricane when it gets to Mango Jam's neck of the woods (Oklahoma).

Please keep the ppl of Texas in your thoughts and prayers!

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. This one is going to be ugly. Evacuations started yesterday and the traffic has been horrible. Not a complaint about the traffic, I'm just thankful people are listening to the warnings and are getting out of harms way. I feel so bad for the folks that came here from Louisiana. To have to go thru another one in such a short time.

SokkerNut: are YOU evacuating??? Evacuated I hope??

If you know anybody who is evacuating and needs a place to stay for a week until things blow over, let me know. I have a nice big guest bedroom w/ three beds and a private guest bathroom. I'd like to help however I can.

Right now, Houston is only in line for a Cat 1, so I don't think they will evacuate. Of course I know hurricanes are a big deal, but once you go through a few you get a feel for them.
But man, does it suck for those from Orleans who just moved to Houston. Ugh!

In answer to your question. I've evacutated yesterday. I'm staying at my mom and dad's. Thank you so much for offer your home. It sounds really nice. If I hear of folks that need a place to stay I'll let them know that you've offered. Most folks seem to be finding places, thank heavens. It just getting to where they need to go that is a problem. They are working on opening up the freeway with more lanes by diverting the inbound lanes. I just hope folks aren't stuck on the roadways when this thing hits.

Where did you see that it will only be Cat 1 when it gets to Houston? I was under the impression that the storm would have only slightly dissipated once it reaches Houston, especially considering that it's not all that far inland. I think they're not forcing mandatory evacuation of the city because of the lack of threat of storm surge. I'll bet it still gets Cat 4.

Not that I'm a meteorologist or expert of any kind, that's just what I've been seeing on the news and on maps.

Rita is currently a Cat 5 but will probably hit the Texas coast (near Galvaston) at about a Cat 3 or 4 on Friday night/Saturday morning.

Since Houston is 130 miles from Galvaston area, they are (currently) predicting that Rita will be a Cat 1 by that time (we hope so).

Sorry, living in Florida requires you to become a weatherman.
Man I hope its a Cat 1 by the time it hits Houston. That city is 5 times the size of New Orleans...
