When you think of MLS, which team do you think of first? My company hired a French intern who happens to be a soccer fan. He and I got into a discussion today about soccer and he said he wasn't familiar with MLS nor the teams. We got talking about European teams and the conversation went something like this:
"When I think of Italy, I think of AC Milan. When I think of Spain, I think of Real Madrid. When I think of England, I think of Manchester United." Then I proceeded to tell him that when I think of MLS I think of Real Salt Lake and then told him I was joking and that in truth, DC United is probably the team most people would associate with soccer in the U.S.A. I don't know if that's a fair assessment or not. I do hope that one day RSL and MLS will become synonymous like EPL and Man U. I'm interested to see what other people's opinions are.

It pains me to say it, but winning four out of nine MLS Cups makes DC the league's flagship franchise. I've never liked DC, but they've got the fullest trophy case and a loyal fanbase. It's ironic because they play in a dump and had three absolutely awful years on the field, but they've earned the recognition.
Second place would have to go to the Galaxy. No one else is even close to those two, although you could make an argument for the Fire and the Quakes based on championships. __________________ Easy to be hard; hard to be smart. --Old Gunny Last edited by Rover : 09-13-2005 at 07:55 AM. Obviously I say RSL because I'm a fan, but I would have to say the Galaxy. Even if you aren't a huge fan of MLS you have probably heard of the LA Galaxy, for some reason I don't think as many have heard of DC United (but that could also be the area of the country you live in).

From an Englishmans point of view I can tell you the teams that I saw and heard of in the UK before I moved here.
The first team that I saw on TV in the UK was DC United, I remember seeing them n the news when the league first started and they were the one held up for the world to see, maybe because they were in the capital maybe beause they would be easily recognised as 'closer' to the rest of the world geographically, nationally (with embassies and the such), and maybe even with the cosmopolitan reputation that it has around the world. Either way that was he one I first heard of and so I have always identified DC with the league. Since I moved here I have always followed that as a semi-fan until they signed freddy 'I like grass best when I'm lying on it' Adu. Since then I have had a tough time respecting them. I guess I'm just not his biggest fan. Lots of reasons. Anyway since then I have often thought more of LA and San Jose, both because in the UK it is generally belivied that soccer is biggest in California and that everyone there loves soccer and no-one else in the US knows or cares about soccer. So then you got me thinking so I called 8 friends in the UK, 2 in Switzerland and two in France and woke them all up to ask them your question ... general response was .... DC United 4, LA Galaxy 3, San Jose 3 and Chicago 1, New York 1. I thought that was interesting. So there you have it.
