-Peter Mellor, former coach with Ellinger at the U17 program, is the GK coach and First Asst.
-Former MLS player Brian Johnson has been chosen as Second Asst, as sort-of indicated previously.
-Chris Agnello formerly of the Utah Blitzz, has been picked as the Third Asst Coach.

There is also an article that the desnews has on the three assistant coaches.

It mentions that Mellor will be head coach of RSL's reserve team and that Brian Johnson will be in charge of Real Salt Lake youth academy.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the reserve team and this youth academy?

It is the first time I have heard of there being a youth academy.

Thanks

👍

So, now we know what they're doing with Chris Agnello! That's great! I was hoping Chris would be a little higher in the pecking order, though. After all, he was coaching D3, but his team was playing at the A-league level (Which they proved several times). That's only one division lower and Brian Johnson was coaching at the college level (somewhat lower level, in my oppinion).

But what the heck, he's in, and that's what counts. Hopefully this will be the start of something really good for Chris Agnello.

Will the hire of Peter Mellor lure in someone like Keller? Or is his task really to mold Countess into the next great keeper? RSL is going to need another GK regardless, do you think we'll get an experienced pro or will we draft one?

I did find it odd that the article makes reference to Mellor saying:
Quote:
"His task with Salt Lake is to mold D.J. Countess, 22, into the team's goalie of the future."
...future of what, USMNT? I thought Countess was RSL's GK of TODAY?

Well maybe that means RSL is getting an older keeper who will take the reigns (sp?) until Countess is ready to take over? Personally, though it would be exciting to have a Keller-type, I think MLS is quite strong at the GK position and I bet Countess is probably already up to snuff and can hold his own between the pipes. But maybe somebody at RSL said that comment about Countess and the article repeated it... which to me would suggest they want to bring in someone else for the #1 GK.

Exactly Jake. Edwards (of DN sports) has been a little off on some of his soccer articles (although I think he is a great guy and we need more pro-soccer sports writers). Perhaps its James's opinion that someone other than Countess will be #1. I too think Countess is good enough to be a starting GK in MLS. I feel comfortable with him in the net.

I would say that we should start looking for RSL to try to get Kasey Keller but according to this he may just be heading to Manchester United.
It is just speculation, but speculation is what all these boards are for :D
