Observations on Supporters' Chants I was sitting in Section 35 tonight and this is what I observed:
I observed a group of about 30 - 40 supporters in section 37 chanting "Ole, Ole, Ole, Real Salt Lake." Then I observed Samba Gringa chanting it. Then I observed Loyalists/RCB/North Endzone chanting it. Then I observed the west side of the stadium chanting it, but all at different times in the game, not all in unison. I wish there were a way to cordinate it better. It seems apparent to me that everyone knows this chant and wants to chant, now how can we get everyone to do it at the same time? Another observation of mine; is it just my imagination, or is Samba Gringa growing in numbers? I think they had more people up there chanting than the Loyalists/RCB did. There were a lot of children with them, but they were all doing the chants. Last observation; my mom is a soccer convert. She said that she enjoyed it more than football or basketball. I bet she even would have stood with the Loyalists and chanted. If I take her to another game that's what will happen.

That excites me to know that the crowd is getting more and more involved. I can't wait for the next home game the fam and I will be at: Sept. 3rd. We'll be bringing a family of 4 with us as well, so hopefully we'll convert them as well. π

The crowd seemed much more sparse last night. That's very disappointing. I hope our crowd size picks up again soon. But at least the crowd that is there is vocal. There needs to be a strong leader in E32/E33 to get the groups going together. The Loyalists and RCB were not cooperating a lot of times... not out of any enmity between them, but just because each group was not paying attention to the other one and woudl start different things at the same time. It was very frustrating to me and it'll be nice to have Mr. Liaison/The Great Maldini/Mr. Holland (not his real last name)/Loyal1/Glenn back at the future games to help the two groups get on the same page.

Our numbers were up from the last two games. I thought I heard 15 something. Someone heard it, I'm sure.
I agree, the crowd seemed to be much more comfortable. I even saw some good harrassment from the north west corner on a San Jose corner kick.

I was there, trying to coordinate with RCB, and many times we were coordinated, but there were also many times that it just didn't work. In short, I missed Glenn...a lot. I think my "little drum" is simply not loud enough and doesn't carry enough, to keep everyone in time with each other. (I wish I could afford a "Grown Up" drum). __________________

Okay, here's what has me worried about those numbers. They count the season ticket holders (I believe) whether they show up, or not. It didn't look like that many people in there, to me. I hope that there isn't a trend of season ticket holders NOT showing up, which might translate to fewer season ticket holders, next season. But I have to agree that the crowd is getting more involved all the time. Now, when we chant "stand up" at the north end, many more of them stand (we just need to remember to start a good chant that they can follow, when we do that). There have been several times when we could here more volume on the chants than we were producing by ourselves. __________________

I recently purchased a package on the brazilian channel's website (www.globo.com.br)(it cost a whole buck fifty, depending on the exchange rate now) which allows me to watch pretty much any A league game in Brazil on the internet (of course, only after it is over). Watching a few games, I hope for the day when the whole stadium knows what to do as far as cheering. Seriously, Brazilian fans are crazy. Event the small stadiums seemed so loud because the whole stadium was chanting something. I think that it is simply a part of the learning process. I have observed that the soccer crowd is different in that they actually want to cheer and get involved during the course of the game. To me, that is what actually makes soccer fun: the fans really like to cheer. I almost wish there was some kind of tutorial on soccer chanting and cheering played on the jumbotron before the game. Like I said, the crowd wants to get involved, and I am sure that once the learning curve is gone, the place will be rockin'.
