CD Chivas USA talk Deuce brought up an excellent point in his post, which I am quoting below:
Quote:
Why does Chivas USA get a Trump Card for criticism? Well personnally I think its for 2 reasons, 1 for biased towards a team in which it's investor is not a soccer-guy, but a sports guy (Dave Checketts, praise his name). Jorge Vergara, the Chivas investor, owns several soccer teams including the parent team Chivas Guadalajara. So it is percieved (and perhaps truthfully so) that Vergara knows more about putting together a successful soccer team. 2 reason is that Chivas is thought to have a strong and developed following and is "expected to win" from the get go. Losing isn't an option. RSL, on the other hand does not have a percieved soccer following and is "expected to struggle mightly", losing is acceptable. Let me add to this conversation by saying that another reason Chivas USA is favored is that they were importing several good internationals form the momma team.....ooops, maybe not. Francisco Palencia ain't coming. 🙂 Chivas USA loses Mexican star http://www.socceramerica.com/article.asp?Art_ID=562135433

👎 They think they will win by divine right. They are blinded by racial and cultural prejudice, and their own pride. If any of us made the kinds of statements they are making, we would be labeled as bigots and totally disregarded.
I believe that they will actually find themselves near the bottom when the season finishes. I believe this because all their plans and goals and efforts are based on irrational, racially and culturally biased premises. IF the premise is flawed, the plan based on that premise will be flawed, as well. If their players were THAT good, they would be at the top of their own league. They'd be beating up on everybody.

Yeah what is with all the Chivas hype? I must shamefully admit that I bought into the idea that they would be good right away, because that's what all the pundits were saying... but why? Andy Williams feeding in balls to Jason Kreis and Clint Mathis seems like an awfully good team to me.

“Francisco Palencia ain't coming”
Yes, that’s right. He isn’t coming for 6 months. Not that big of a deal.

Where did you read that he even wants to come Arelius?
From what I read, Palencia told Vergara that he didn't want to come to which Vergara initially said "you will or else". This article by Soccer America obviously shows Vergara has pulled back from that attitude. I do not believe Palencia will ever come, unless he has to. "Palencia se va o ya no juega (Palencia leaves or doesn't play) http://gruporeforma.mural.com/coberturas/Guadalajara/frame.asp?Nivel=1&Tipo=1&DirCob=Guadalajara&Folder=mural&baseAddress=gruporeforma.mural.com&Url=http://gruporeforma.mural.com/parseo/printpage_especial.asp?pagetoprint=../Elementos/mural/deportes/articulo/445619/default.htm The point to this is that ppl give props to Chivas USA because they can draw on "great talent" from the mothership. I don't think Chivas Guadalajara is really that good in any case.

I'm with Jim on this one. I think that people are looking at the Chivas as this fabulous team that is comprised of soccer playing mexicans. They have the attitude of "They're Latin!! Those crazy Latinos love their futbol!!".
Come April I believe we're going to be hearing a lot of: "Williams...to Kreis...GOAL!" "Williams...to Mathis...GOAL!"

"2-2 in second-half injury time. There must be just seconds left. Countess to take the goal kick... Its a short one to Rusty Pierce, who swivels on his left and passes off to Behncke. Behncke is challenged by Mark Chung. Chung lunges for the ball and Behncke nutmegs him and then passes off to Akwari. Akwari takes the ball almost to the half-field mark and is challenged by Chris Henderson. Akwari easily evades Henderson and passes off to Brian Kamler. Kamler switches field to Brenes, who provides a through-ball to Jeff Stewart. Stewart heals it deftly to Kevin Ara, who crosses from the left. Andy Williams flicks the ball onto Jason Kreis, who finds Mathis on the far post: GGGGGOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL, Mathis!"
"It was a speculative strike by the least suspecting of the Salt Lake side. Mathis buried Kreis' assist and bulged the old onion bag! Real Salt Lake secure the full three points and send Colorado packing with a devastating loss!"

Chivas have made the playoffs every season since Vergara took over.
Which is better than their archrivals America. They were in the finals last season, where they lost to UNAM Pumas; who were coached by Jason Kreis' former teammate Hugo Sanchez. But this year, they lost to their local rivals Atlas. Paco Palencia popped up a penalty so bad that NORAD scrambled some F-16's to intercept it. At least Baggio's & Beckham's famous penalty misses were somewhere near the goal. If we had to have a subsidiary of an MFL team in MLS, why not Necaxa USA, Toluca USA, Atlas USA or Pumas USA? These teams have some combination of winning trophies and/or developing young talent. Chivas did won some championships, but all but one of them were before 1997. What have they won recently? Besides the award for the team with the Most Myopic fans?

"Chivas have made the playoffs every season since Vergara took over."
I can't wait for the day when we won't have to worry about playoffs. I doubt it will come any time soon, if ever. I long for the day when a championship is a championship is a championship (a la English Premier League, Bundesliga, Primera Liga, Serie A, etc.).
