Look at your next property tax statement. You will feel better.

As an RSL supporter AND a Utah fan, I don't like this idea. Let's be clear--it's not a nutty idea if you are trying to find an alternative to building a new RSL stadium and you don't particularly care about soccer. In other words, if you are a typical politician in Salt Lake County. That's what makes is so bad for those of us who do care about soccer.

I don't think I need to add to all the reasons why RSL needs a new--and soccer specific--stadium. Soccer fans know all about sharing stadiums and the fact is it just doesn't do the job. Temporarily, OK, but not as a long term home.

As for the Utes, I don't want anyone messing with Rice-Eccles. Let's face it, we used to have a crappy stadium, and now we have a great one. I don't like the sound of "some lower seating would be temporarily removed." Leave RES alone.

RSL needs a soccer stadium. That's a given. Any proposal that doesn' start at that point is not productive for us. Funding? Taxes? Those are the sticky issues and they will be tough to negotiate. But I say no negotiation on the need for a soccer specific stadium.

Warning, Soccer Newbie Question:

How does England and those in Europe that have snowfall in winter deal with having an outdoor sport during the winter months? I can't imagine having as much of a turn-out to games in the dead of winter. :P

Or if you want to feel even better, look at the bulletin board at work. Notice how there are no Plant Closing notices caused by your employer moving to Wyoming, Nevada, California, Jalisco or Guangdong to get away from our higher property taxes.

Then you will feel better yet.

I am probably naive or stupid, but I have no problem w/ my property taxes going up a percent or two to build a new soccer stadium. In reality it is only a few bucks a month... There are a lot worse things that could cause my property taxes to go up. I am probably a bad person to respond to this as I generally don't have too big of a problem w/ small tax increases for things that I see as improving the city.

Agreed! Completely! There just isn't any room for negotiation on that one. Nearly everything else if up for grabs, but that one is fixed. It's necessary.

I see Mrs Fields Field as "improving the city". Most people in Utah do not.

A lot more people see a taxpayer-funded 45,000 seat Larry H Miller Stadium for the Utah Twins as "improving the city".

Yeah, but they have such pretty stadiums.

When Cleveland jacked up their tax rates to fund stadiums for the Browns, Indians & Cavaliers, they figured they were improving the city.

Instead, they drove businesses out of town to escape the taxes. Some of them went to Columbus, home of Lamar Hunt's privately funded Crew Stadium.

Some of the businesses went to Shenzen.

England doesn't get much snow--usually just rain. They play right through.

Germany takes about a month off--from Christmas to the end of January.

The far northern countries take at least a couple months off.

While we're on this subject . . . I like the way they do it Argentina--two "seasons" a year. Mexico does the same, but adds a playoff at the end. We can't play through the winter in most MLS cities, but we could break up the season. Just a thought.

And now, back to the stadium issue. :sport:

Not really. I already see lots of stuff on there that I don't particularly care about or wish to support. Yet I am forced to anyway. I would love to actually see something on there that I would like to support eagerly.

The way I see it, I help other people by supporting things I don't care about or use that they want. They can turn around and help support something that I actually care about and want. It all evens out in the end.
