Thank You! Bugs me to no avil. You try to join in a conversation and all the guys look at you, like just because you wear a ponytail and a sports-bra you can't have any knowledge about soccer. Aghh. I'm cranky. Just lost a soccer game. 3-2. Grrness. :sad1:

Good vent.

I've been following this game since the '60's (that's the 1960's for those tempted to joke about my age) and I learn something new every day. I've never met a true soccer expert, least of all me.

The game is humbling and deceptively simple.

Wait, that's not a vent. See what you've done! πŸ™…

They had TV in the 1960's?

For me goalie is fine.

I like match better than game and pitch better than field.

I am agnostic about kit/uniform.

I find myself using offside/offsides interchangably.

Boots....hate that.

None of this however gets me to the point of ever having to vent about it really. Well, maybe when Americans say boots.

I like pitch, match, uniform...

And I am sloppy enough to say offsides even if I know how it's supposed to be said. :D

Reminds me of a time a few years ago and we're watching a World Cup match. There was a point in the match where a goal was scored and a family member started in on how it was an illegal play and how the referee had totally blown an out of bounds call before the goal. I asked him what in the world he was talking about and we used 'tivo' to go back until a point about 30 seconds before the goal and he says "SEE, the ball is out of bounds". Sure enough the ball was just touching the inside edge of the line. I explained that in soccer the entire ball must cross the entire line for it to be out of bounds.

Then he starts in how soccer is stupid because in EVERY other sport, if the ball touches a line it is out of bounds. I then observed that other sports that have an out of bounds rule similar to soccer include baseball, volleyball, tennis, and hockey (when determining a goal).

It's all good. I learned "Goalie" before I ever heard "Keeper". "Field" seems natural, but "Pitch" is cool. In general I like the British terms better. After all, they've been playing this game longer than we have, and anyway the British are just cool (except when they use the "F" word all the time).

What I hate is people who imply that I'm wrong when I use either term! So there! :torch:
