Clint Mathis

8. Not Shocking. The Clint Mathis Goal Drought. Thirteen games, all starts, and no goals -- and just four shots on goal -- for the former SI coverboy. This does not surprise me. For a while now, Mathis has been playing more like an American version of (then 36-year-old) Hristo Stoitchkov than the attacking marvel we saw in 2000 and 2001. Like Hristo, Mathis is full of tricks and one day just may fool a 'keeper with one of those long lobs, but the old Clint Mathis is long gone by now. And I'll be shocked if that player ever returns.

Maybe someone should post this in the RSL locker room. Something needs to be done to light a fire under his @$$! Thing is you know he still has the touch. That assist to Kreis in the LA game was a thing of beauty.

Clint's just in a slump. I admit he's getting old. Too old to play? Heck no! I'm just waiting for him to get back in the groove and work his magic. And yes, I do think someone should post that in the RSL locker room. But I bet Clint is the most embarassed of all at his recent performances. Being the veteran that he is he will only use his discouragements as building blocks to get back in top form. Mathis is like Karl Malone, you can't keep him down.

Too bad he doesn't take as many shots as Karl Malone.

Or, have as many rebounds. Now, personal fouls, maybe he's up to Karl's level there.

Only Kreis has more shots with 30

10 M-F Clint Mathis Assists-3 Shots-21 SOG-4

but sadly only 19% of his shots are on goal.

He's had some accuracy problems. Though to be fair, most of clints shots are from well outside 18, and he really ought to have more than 3 assists...he should've had at least 2 last game.

You're right, but a shot off goal is just a turnover. No chance for rebound, no chance for goal, the other side just gets a goal kick.

Yes, but as I tell my bball team, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

You also miss 100% of the shots that are not on goal. 😉

I agree with everyone about Clint and his struggles. However, I thought he did pretty good last game trying to set people up for goals. Yes, he should've had at least 2 assists last game...but is that necessarily Clint's fault? One ALMOST assist that comes to mind...a delivery to the far post that I believe O'Brien got a head on and ALMOST put it in the goal, but a goalie by the name of Onstadt got his paw on it before it crossed the line. I think Clint will get online and please us all eventually...hopefully sooner than later.
