I know, that’s why I didn’t say I was completely against it. It’s just the idea of adding technology to the game that I don’t like, but I guess even the beautiful game must change with the times, even if it’s something as small as this.

It is a small change that would rid the game of unecessary controversy. I don't want to see video replay, that would ruin the game.

Now if the chip is in the middle of the ball, how would it tell if the ball went completely over the line? I wonder how that will work. 😕

I'm sorry, but I'm not a chip master. 🙄

Dunivant insisted he was telling the truth when he said: 'No, it wasn't over. It was close. It was right on it, but it defintely didn't go over.'"

I wondered if that ball didn't actually go over the line. It sure looked close to me. Apparently, I'm not the only one.

Is 'caromed' a word?

My husband's expertise right now is in Radio-frequency ID chips in credit card fobs. Maybe he could shed some light on this for us all.... I'm pretty sure he's aware of the technology because he was telling me about chips in soccer balls several months ago. Too bad he doesn't post of the forum (actually, good thing, because he has enough to keep him busy...)

Pretty easily, actually. All you have to do is place the goal sensors behind the line equal to the distance of the radius of the sphere of the ball. So, if the ball is 2 units wide, place the sensors 1 unit behind the line.

And on the same topic, UEFA actually had some discussion of a new technology that basically amounted to robotic devices determining off-sides position. Much more complex, obviously, and probably much more controversial.

I don't see why the goal sensors shouldn't be used. It's a technology that degrades gracefully (if you can afford to use 'em, great -- if not, go back to relying on the officials). But people are always going to be suspicious of technology, and the first time that one of those things malfunctions, I'm sure we would hear about it, but just think of all of soccer's historical controversies that would be eliminated if this kind of thing had been implemented. Maybe people just like controversy.

I wish we had technology that showed us when Argentinian players touched the ball with their hands.

We do. This particular type of advanced technology is called "eyesight". Apparantly some referee units have not received this upgrade. 😎
