Build stadium in Salt Lake, poll says
http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,600141172,00.html

The poll, commissioned by The Salt Lake Tribune, showed 31.5 percent of respondents from Davis, Salt Lake, Summit and Utah counties think the Utah State fairgrounds is the best location for the stadium. Another 17 percent agreed a stadium should be located downtown, the newspaper said in a copyright story.
As for the other cities bidding to be the soccer team's home base: Sandy had the support of 17.8 percent of respondents, trailed by Murray with 13.8 percent support.

How come I wasn't part of the poll!?!?!?!? Fairgrounds?!?!?! We need to get the word out people or we're going to have a "stinky" stadium. Heaven forbid that becomes its nickname if it's built there!!!!! Additionally, whacking the cowbells would have a whole new meaning!

One positive, though. Perhaps they could hold rodeos in the stadium as well! 😠

I can't see the FO building it at the fairgrounds. Tax payers' opinions matter, but they do not have the final say in where this goes. Checketts does not HAVE to plop down millions for anybody unless he chooses. (Well, you know what I mean.)

It will be interesting to see if any of this taxpayer "backlash" has any effect on the re-election campaigns of the various mayors who want to fork out public money to land the stadium, or of JHM Jr, who basically wants the same thing but couches it in business-speak to confuse people.

I doubt it. Utah voters have a tendency to vote for incumbents.

To be brutally honest, I don't care about politicians or their re-election schemes in regards to this issue. What I DO care about is NOT having the stadium built at the fairgrounds. If it comes down to it, I don't care if it's built in any of the other proposed locations in Salt Lake County as long as it's NOT at the fairgrounds! If that means it garners someone political capital for a seemingly unfair reason - so be it! If that means someone plays dirty to the point that other politicians feel slighted - so be it! Just as long as the stadium is NOT built at the fairgrounds!!!!!! 😠

I care if the general public grows to hate RSL because of the public funding issue, though...

I don't care about the public opinion, as long as we get our public funding for the land for the stadium.

I don't know that anyone's looked at the feasibility of this yet, but what about the block just south of Pioneer Park? Of anywhere downtown, this seems like one of the better spots you could build a stadium. It's close to every I-15 entrance and exit, and a close walk to what will be the intermodal hub (so both Trax and commuter rail--sorry UC'ers).
Of course, the best downtown location was already mentioned. (Earl Holding--whatta guy. First he ruins Snowbasin, now he sits on two whole city blocks that could be used for something better than asphalt. Grrr.)
And really, the second best would be the block that the Garff megalots sit on, but I think we all know why THAT wouldn't happen, don't we? Even though I can't imagine they're making a lot of money in that location. Their taxes have gotta be eating up their profits.
