I wonder if some of the lesser-paid players own there? My guess is no. During the non-ski months you can get some excellent deals on housing in Park City. One summer we rented a huge 5 bedroom, 3 bath condo that was only like 2 years old, had a jacuzzi and a great kitchen, highspeed internet, cable and utilities included for well under $700/month. That place totally made my commute to Provo worth it!

Oddly, what I like best about Utah County (that it is dominated by BYU) is probably exactly what other people hate about it. And I just love watching those mountains burn year after year. That is seriously so cool. I'll bet some people think that is not a good thing either.
Holy flippin' heck! I'm not the only Fire Watcher on the board. Every year my husband and I go driving around watching the mountains burn and burn and burn. It's very entertaining if you have some binoculars. Actually, we went fire watching the week we started dating, so it's kind of a sentimental thing, too.

O.S., why do you live in Provo two months a year? Is it related to BYU?

Park City is a resort town, essentially, which seems to equal chic. And yes, I think it's much more diverse. Unfortunately, all the people I have known who lived in Park City were really bratty, spoiled rich kids. That's what happens when you teach at a private school. You meet the spoiled rich kids. (You also meet some of the nicest people on the planet because their parents got rich by being downright nice people.)

Bottom line: find a job and use that as a center to start from, looking for housing. Or rather, let us look for you. Find the nice neighborhoods near the job or consider commuting if prices are too high in that neighborhood. Honestly, it's worth living a little out of the way. I have twice the house I would if I were in Draper. My brother is a home builder and he's paying prices for lots (empty lots...) that are as expensive as my entire house! Holy heck!

You can get a really good deal in Eagle Mountain. Eagle Mountain is between Provo and Salt Lake. It's a good central location and it's growing very fast. Crime is very low in Eagle Mountain too. The Mayor is a kook (he staged his own kidnapping). The nice thing about Eagle Mountain is that you can drive about 5 miles to the north to buy your gas in Salt Lake County. The gas in Utah County is oxygenated in the winter months and it causes engine problems over time. I don't have anything against Utah County. I have lived in Provo, Springville, and Eagle Mountain. You will run into a lot of sanctamonious types in Provo and Springville but I did not encounter that in Eagle Mountain. There is also a very nice golf course in Eagle Mountain if you're into golf.

About Park City, it is a very chique area. I lived in Kimball Junction which is just off Interstate 80 and about 10 miles outside of Old Town. There are some real jerks up there, but most of the people were very nice. D.J. Countess and Clint Mathis live in Park City, but I'm not sure where. Other notables living in Park City are Roma Downey and David Hasselhoff. If you like to ski, Park City would be very nice.

Back to Eagle Mountain for a moment. Housing in Eagle Mountain ranges from $80,000 to $200,000 and I would say that there's not a bad place to live in the entire city. All of the housing is new (not older than 10 years). It has a very rural feel to it. There is no pubic transportation, so that might be a downside. My brother lives in Eagle Mountain. He will be moving to Rhode Island in August to go to graduate school. If he is selling his condo, I will let you know if you are interested.

I was just joking around about the "being ribbed by Old Ska..." :p In addition, I must certainly agree with the fire watching parties. If you ever want to people watch... watch the people who go bumper to bumper to see the mountain burn. I remember the Springville fires a few years ago were especially popular. The road was seriously a traffic jam unlike any other I've seen in Utah.

I'll also agree that Eagle Mountain would be a good choice for you since you're not uber-rich. My husband and I looked all over in Eagle Mountain and considered it strongly when we were thinking about building a new house. I haven't been out there in a long time, though. Another good possibility would be Saratoga Springs which is another "little-bit-past-Lehi" city. Also there are some great new neighborhoods in Lehi. Lehi used to be a sleepy old hick town but there are some excellent areas in it now.

Again, get a job and find a place close to it. Lehi, Eagle Mountain and Saratoga Springs are all very commuting-friendly, though, because they are on the extreme north part of Utah County.

Stay away from:

1. West Valley

4. Central City (Salt Lake)
5. South Provo
6. West Provo

West Valley and Midvale have the highest crime rates in Utah. I'm not sure about crime rates in the nice areas I mentioned. I have lived in Park City (Kimball Junction) and really enjoyed it. It's in the mountains and only about a 30 minute drive from Salt Lake. It's very serene and quiet and the people are friendly, for the most part.
Your information about Midvale is largely a myth. Murray has higher crime rates than most of the towns you mentioned. Midvale has a rep, but it really isn't deserved. There a couple of pockets of apartment houses, but even one block away from those is just fine.

I don't mean to malign Midvale. It's just that my inlaws lived there and had their house broken into. There was also a brothel about a block away. They now live in Herriman. Herriman would be another good choice. It's on the South West side of Salt Lake County out by the Bingham Copper Mine. It's similar to Eagle Mountain. I'm not sure about housing costs in Herrirman though. But you are right about Murray, Murray actually has a higher crime rate than West Valley.
