Besagno and U-17's v. Costa Rica [R]

If you thought our win over the CRapids makes the future look bright, just look what Nik Besagno's been up to with the U-17 USMNT:

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/headlinenews?id=330986&cc=5901

"Nikolas Besagno provided the U.S. with an early lead in the 11th minute when he buried a misplayed ball by Costa Rica goalkeeper Alfonso Quesada."

"The beginning of the second half was defined by tough tackles by the U.S., especially by Besagno and Ryan Soroka. Besagno had his most complete game of the tournament, winning the ball with crunching tackles and helping to dictate the pace."

Folks, they were playing IN COSTA RICA, and beat them 2-1. Outstanding job, and now off the FIFA World Championships in Peru.

Yes, the future looks very, very bright.

No time to check that RSSSF site, but has any US men's team at any level ever won in Costa Rica?

I only have data for the USMNT, so this is a limited answer, but it's--yes and no.

If you count an Olympic Qualifier back in 1980, we have a grand total on ONE win in Costa Rica. That's against three draws and six losses.

Take the OLQ's out and we've never won in Costa Rica, with one draw and six losses.

Overall, since the first USA-CR match in 1959, we're 11-5-10 (WDL) against the Ticos with the OLQ's, and 10-4-10 without.

It's tough to win in Central America, obviously. Sure makes the U-17's look even better for getting the win.

I asked about this in the Nik Besagno thread too, but this can be a whole team type thing, they're being beat in Brazil for the most part. Discuss!

His College bio:

2003: Jacob Besagno has been a fixture in the defense his entire career...has played in every match that Seattle has played over the past three seasons, and has started all but two of them...scored two goals from the back line in 2003 to bring his career total to eight...his goal just before halftime against Cal State L.A. (10/05/03) was not only his first of the season, but it was also the gamewinner in the 1-0 victory on the road. 2002: While his main interest is defense, Besagno's sophomore season was his most productive offensively...he scored five goals with two assists while helping the defense post a 1.18 goals against average...named second-team all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference. 2001: As a freshman, Besagno earned honorable mention all-GNAC honors after starting all but one match for the Redhawks...scored one goal and one assist from the back line. Kennedy HS: Besagno was a South County Journal all-area selection and defensive MVP for Kennedy Prep...helped the Lancers win the 2000 class 3A state title...also won back-to-back state titles with his club team, the Federal Way Storm, in 1999 and 2000. Personal: Major is marketing at Seattle...younger brother plays on the U.S. under-17 national team...parents are John and Barbara Besagno.
