Wynalda profiles Mathis

Eric Wynalda has an interesting take on Clint Mathis:

(If the link doesn't work, go to MLSnet.com and check for Wynalda's column).

Bottom line--Mathis' job is to fill the stands, and he'll do that whether you love him or hate him.

He's also clear that Mathis has a unique (and underappreciated) talent for the game. That talent is often obscured by the show that always surrounds him but there are few players who are as good when they're really "on."

This may be a first, but I completely agree with Wynalda on this one.

I liked that article, a lot. And I agree that Cleatus' job is to bring in crowds, and I think he will do it. But let us not forget that his other job is to score goals. I think he will do that, also. He certainly set up the goal yesterday.
