Riot In Italy

How in the world did they get flares past security?

Flares are standard in Italian matches. It is completely normal for fans to wave them around in the stands. It wasn't normal when they started throwing them all over the field though.

This may be the end of the flare shows. I know they look cool, but it just makes no sense to allow them in stadiums, especially in the hands of ultras who are loaded and ready to do damage well before the opening kick.

Expect the Italian soccer authorities to be pressured by UEFA to fix their security problems. The past two weeks have been a disgrace.

I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say that they're probably not going to let me bring my road flares into Rice-Eccles today. Milan's fans had to go and ruin that for me too.

What's going on with the swastika flags? Lazio fans had these at their game in Rome against Livorno on April 10th.

Why would Nazi flags be showing up in Italy?

Jake, any idea?

An Italian guy I work with says that they're the Ultras and they're just a group of punks that like to cause trouble.

Now you understand why everyone hates Lazio. They have a history of being neo-nazi, neo-fascist, racist, etc.. It doesn't help that their top player Di Canio claims to be a fan of Mussolini and does the "roman salute" after he scores goals.

Rome has small nazi and fascist groups like most major cities probably do, but for some reason Lazio has been their team. That is another reason why us Roma fans loathe Lazio so much. (They are regularly referred to as "Nazio")... I always cheer for Italian teams in European competitions, even the ones I normally hate (Milan, Juve, etc.) BUT I never cheer for Lazio, in any competition, ever.

Thanks for the info Jake. That´s interesting about "Nazio", sad but interesting.

Hey, just a quick note, I´m posting this right now from Chile. I´m down here for a few days to visit my kids but I will be back for our next game agaisnt San Jose.

I´ve been able to watch alot of games down here. There are about 4 or 5 channels that show soccer almost nonstop. I watched the first half of Roma vs. Sampdoria this morning.

They even spoke alittle bit the other night about the at that point upcomming Chivas Galaxy game. Other than that, no other mention of MLS.

Later.
