Dumb Question

If the ball leaves the pitch, goes up in the stands, and I catch it, do I get to keep it?

I've often wondered that myself, but I don't think so. Watching any game in the MLS or Premier league, I always see them returning the ball. Dang... 🙁

You can try, but 15,000 other pairs of eyes plus those on the side line looking at you will most likely convince you to toss it back…

Oh, and you should probably keep your baseball glove at home. I don’t think the soccer ball will fit…

Last year I attended a cRapids game and a teenager caught one of the balls. As soon as he caught it he took off running towards the exit. Security took off after him. I'm not sure if he made it or not. The retail on those balls is about $100 so I can't say I blame him. 🙂 It WAS pretty funny because this kid was kinda heavy, if you know what I mean...

The 1994 strike cured me of being a baseball fan.

But maybe that is one thing that soccer could learn from baseball.

No, you can't keep a $100 ball.

But maybe you could trade it back for a T Shirt or a sticker or something like that?

On a sort of related note, when I attended Quakes games during the 2001 season the players would come out at the end of half time and kick the $40 replicas into the stands as they would jog to their positions. I was the happy recipient of one (that i have since thrashed) kicked by Zak Ibsen.

It paid to have long arms that day.

In soccer, it's traditional to throw the ball back--you don't keep it. Of course, as has been mentioned on this thread, security is there to help you do the right thing. 😉

It's true about the Quakes--I saw the same thing. If they give it to you, that's different. I think the cheering was louder for the ball giveaway than for the team itself.

That was one of my favorite Casbah chants. Everytime they kicked the balls into the stands or had the people come out with those sling shots that shoot t-shirts into the stands and stuff, and the crowd would erupt in cheers begging for the schwag to come their way, the Casbah would chant "You only cheer for T-shirts" to the tune of the more often used chant "You'll never beat Pat Onstad."
